PRACTICAL NO: 6

EVALUATION OF SEMEN FOR MACROSCOPIC CHARACTERS

REVELENCE:

The semen is ejaculated to determine the suitable for dilution storage and to predict male
fertility.

MATERIALS:

 Semen sample
 Graduated glass conical tube (10 ml capacity)

METHODS:

Immediately after semen collection, the gross examination of semen is conducted for volume,
color, consistency and foreign materials.

 VOLUME:

Evaluation time: Nomenclature:

None Aspermia

Reduced Hypospermia

Increased Hyperspermia

Cattle: 3 to 5 ml, average 4 ml

Color: Creamy white

Odour: It has its own odour

Density: Thickness / Thinness

Foreign material: Dirty, dust, blood, hair, mucus, Vaseline, water

OBSERVATIONS:

S.N. Character Observation

1. Volume (ml) 2.5 ml

2. Color Creamy white
3. Consistency Normal / Viscous
4. Foreign material Not found

REMARKS:

Since normal volume of semen is 5/6 ml, the collected volume is low, but the semen was
collected during daytime so that the heat stress may be the cause of low volume.

The color was normal so, it is recommended for further microscopic examination before use.

PRECAUTIONS:

 Examine the semen as soon as possible after its collection.

 Protect and handle the ejaculated properly.

CONCLUSION:

Thus, we became familiar with the evaluation of semen macroscopic character.
