Y Environmental Impacts Equipment tx Major Losses * Leaks, leks, leaks ——_ * Poor inspection usually = does not impact safety Tenis V It's a forgotten piece of ve equipment! tee * Nes been there for pad decades = | It’s more complex than it vesmivey appears res "fs just a tank” | Y Cleaning a tank can be very expensive nn Code Drivers: API 510 (Vessels) and API 570 (Piping) and “driven” more by impacts to Health & Safety and poteniial Equipment damage. API 653 is different! 11 is “driven” primarily by the potential impact to the Environment. Lack of inspection, usually does not cause rist to personnel, or result in significant equipment damage (they don't fail down!) That's one reason why it’s hard to get tank work done. People have died in injuries associated with tanks, but usually it is an operation type error, e.g. allow entry on floating roof tank that has trapped H2S, tank repairs are preformed and tank is not adequately prepped. Exception: Don't walk on a roof that has not been adequately inspected! If the roof plates are thin, there is a chance that someone could fall through! Complex Equipment: The API 653 exam may be the hardest of the API exams, A tank has 3 major components, Roof, Shell, and Bottom. The rules for cach are very different, so there is more to memorize. You always have to ‘memorize thinking of the component. For example, “How deep of pit is allowed?” The rules applying to Roofs, Shells, and Bottoms are very different! 77 653 Conification ~ Copyright MSTS
