1. Describe Freud’s family background including the composition and his growing up

ANSWER: Sigismund (later changed to Sigmund) Freud was born on 6 May 1856 in
Freiberg, Moravia (now Pribor in the Czech Republic). He was an Austrian neurologist
who is perhaps most known as the founder of psychoanalysis. He developed a set of
therapeutic techniques centered on talk therapy that involved the use of strategies such
as transference, free association, and dream interpretation. His father was a merchant.
Freud’s early schooling, like that of his siblings, took place at home under his mother’s
direction. His father, Jakob, contributed to his education as Freud grew older. The family
moved to Leipzig and then settled in Vienna, where Freud was educated. Freud's family
were Jewish but he was himself non-practising.
