The Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Shri


Bhupendra Yadav has released the "India State of Forest Report
2021" today.

This report has been prepared by the Forest Survey of India (FSI), a
Dehradun-based organization.

This report is being published biennially since 1987 and is the 17th
edition of this report.

In this report, data obtained from the Indian Remote Sensing


Satellite Resource SAT-2 has been used for the assessment of forest
and forest resources.

The total forest and tree cover of the country is 80.9 million hectares
which are 24.62 percent of the country's geographical area.
The total forest and tree cover of the country has increased by 2261
sq km as compared to the estimate of 2019.

Out of this, an increase of 1540 sq km has been observed in forest


cover and 721 sq km in tree cover.

According to the report, Madhya Pradesh has the largest forest area
in the country in terms of area.

The maximum increase in forest area has been recorded in Andhra


Pradesh at 647 sq. km.

According to the report, more than 33 percent of the total


geographical area of 17 states/union territories is covered by forest.

The total stock in the country's forests is estimated to be 7204


million tonnes.

The total mangrove cover in the country is 4992 sq km, of which an


increase of 17 sq km has been observed.
