Product Information
LIGNITE
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Lignite is powdered leonardite, a soft, brown low‐grade coal. It is used as a dispersant and fluid loss
control additive in freshwater and saltwater fluids up to 50,000 ppm chlorides. Lignite is also used to
emulsify oil and asphalts into drilling fluids. Combined with a calcium scavenger such as SAPP or
Sodium Bicarbonate, it is effective in treating cement‐contaminated fluids. Lignite has a low pH and is
most effective as a thinner when a hydroxide(caustic soda) is present in the drilling fluid. Four sacks of
lignite will neutralize the pH increase of one sack of caustic soda.
APPLICATION
*Fluid Loss Control Additive(2‐10 ppb)
*Dispersant(1/2‐4 ppb)
*Emulsifier(1‐2 ppb)
