MINKOWSKI SPACE

In Newtonian mechanics, space and time are completely separable and the transformations
connecting the space-time coordinates are the Galilean -transformations. But, in relativistic
mechanics, the space and time coordinates depend on each other and the correct transformation
equations connecting the space-time coordinates are Lorentz transformations. In Lorentz
transformation the time coordinate of one inertial system depends on both the space and time
coordinates of another system. Therefore, instead of treating the space and time coordinates
separately, it is natural to treat both the coordinates together. H. Minkowski was the first to
develop a procedure in which the time coordinate is treated similar to the three space
coordinates.
