CHEM 315 (Lec)

Answer the following problems. Show calculations (when necessary) and express your answers in
correct number of significant figures.

1. Argus obtained the following weights as results for the determination of acetaminophen (in
milligrams) in ten separate tablets of Excedrin Extra Strength Pain Reliever.

Report the mean, standard deviation, and variance for these data.

2. Esmeralda used a developed method for determination of morphine hydrochloride in tablets,

and obtained the following results:

For each dosage, calculate the mean and standard deviation for the milligrams of morphine
hydrochloride per tablet.

3. Eudora conducted a quantitative determination of Cr in high-alloy steels by a potentiometric

titration of Cr6+ using a standard analytical procedure. The steel was dissolved in acid and the
chromium oxidized to Cr6+ by peroxydisulfate, and then titrated with an appropriate titrant.
Following are their results (%w/w Cr) for the analysis of a single reference steel.

Calculate the mean, the standard deviation, and the 95% confidence interval about the mean. What
does this confidence interval mean?

4. Ten laboratories in the city of Acropolis were asked to determine the concentration of mercury
in three standard test samples.

Determine if there are any potential outliers in Sample 1, Sample 2, or Sample 3 at a 95% confidence
level.
5. Freya conducted a gas chromatographic (GC) measurement of palmitic acid content from a palm
oil and compared the results of this method to a method that has recently been developed on a
new high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) instrument installed in the laboratory.
Using the data listed below, determine whether there is a significant difference in the mean of
the two methods.
