Giving us yet another glimpse into the future is Jaguar’s FUTURE-TYPE, a concept car
for a world of autonomous, connected, electric and shared mobility designed to meet
the mobility needs of future generations.
At the heart of the FUTURE-TYPE is the world’s first intelligent and connected

tasks, such as summon your car, play music, book you a table and even know what’s

LETTER OF THE MONTH I loved the fabulous road trip special issue
of Jaguar World [September, 2017]. I use
my 2003 XKR 4.2 as often as possible
and have driven it all over Europe.
I agree with Paul Walton about how
these cars are made for trans-continental
journeys. In 2015, I used my car for an
Italian touring holiday and the 800-
mile trip there – through France, into
Switzerland before arriving in Milan two
days later – was fantastic, as good as the
holiday itself.
It’s a shame Paul’s car broke down

Twin test
Great twin-test by Paul Wager with
the X-TYPE and Rover 75 [see JW,
October 2017, p72]. I owned almost
identical examples of these cars when
they were new.
Paul was right when he said the 75
had a unique character whereas the
X-TYPE, due to its Ford heritage, felt
like any other car. Yet it was always my
favourite of the two. It offered a better
drive than the Rover, a nicer interior
and suffered from less issues over the
two years I owned it. Perhaps that’s
one reason why Rover is no more while
Jaguar goes from strength to strength.

According to Jaguar’s recommended service schedules, Nene Jag Specialists says the air
filter on the XK8 should be renewed every 30,000 miles, or earlier if it’s dirty (Jag Spares
North East sells a new air filter for £13.99). The spark plugs on the naturally aspirated V8
up until 1999 should be renewed every 30,000 miles (including all supercharged XKRs),
whereas later XK8s can have their plugs changed every 70,000 miles. The coolant should
be renewed every five years and the brake fluid every two years.
The gearbox oil was originally classed by Jaguar as not needing to be changed (for
life), but Nene Jag Specialists recommends renewal intervals at least every 50,000-
60,000 miles. Jaguar Spares North East sells the filter and gasket for the five-speed
ZF for £39.95 (ATF Dexron III can be used on this gearbox). The ZF six-speed’s filter is
part of the sump pan, so this and a gasket costs a little more, at £78, and a special ZF

All these pipes are exposed to road dirt and salt, so if they are in good condition it’s
worthwhile protecting them with a smear of grease. If they are lightly corroded (surface
corrosion), it may be possible to clean off this corrosion and, providing the wall of the brake
pipe has not broken down, protect with a smear of grease. If you are at all unsure whether
a brake pipe has corroded too far, or want peace of mind, most garages and independent
Jaguar specialists charge around £40 to renew each brake pipe.

Angus Hart bought his December 2002-registered XK8 4.2 convertible in 2010
having looked at XKs all over the UK.
He has now covered approximately 15,000 miles in his metallic British Racing
Green convertible (an impressive 3,000 of them on a tour of Scotland), and regularly
attends the Silverstone Classic and XKEC-organised Growler weekends. Occasional
problems have arisen, which Angus has usually managed to resolve. “We have had
some electrical faults with the braking sensors and indication lights on the dash
not lighting up, plus the hood hydraulics went one day at a wedding showering the
passenger seat with fluid, though luckily, no one was in the seat at the time,” he says.
“My motto is: If I can’t sort it, I’ll get the man I would have got in the first place to
do it,” which is his local mechanic. “I love everything about my XK8 – every minute
driving it, washing it and, dare I say it, repairing it also.”

The fuel pump is known to fail, often giving no warning, as editor Paul Walton can testify
when he broke down on his way to the Nürburgring in Germany [see JW, August 2017,
p30). On the XKR, there are luckily two fuel pumps, so the engine will often keep going,
but with less performance. On the XK8, the only solution is to change the pump, which
requires the fuel tank to be removed. This is located in the boot, so set aside at least half
a day to complete the work required. Aftermarket fuel pumps are the cheapest answer at
around £70 (a genuine pump and gauze filter costs £210), but will require the wiring to
be modified (cut off the plug and fit the aftermarket one supplied with the pump).

ANY DIGNITARIES flying into Gibraltar
were once picked up in this ministerial
car at the airport. Its new owner,
Graeme Vaughan, was in the fortunate
position of living in an apartment
overlooking the airport at the time, and would often
see his longed-for Jaguar picking them up.
“This elegant black 3.5-litre Jaguar X350 was new in
2005, the same year I arrived in Gibraltar,” he explains. “I
went there to join my brother in a building project on the
Rock and expected to be there for around six months.
But the project deadline was extended, I met my wife, we
had a child and bought a house. I love the place.”
Although Graeme’s passion is for Daimlers (he owns
what is probably the finest Daimler XJ40 in existence, a
Double-Six Series 3, and is currently restoring a Double-Six
Series 1), this special Jaguar was owned by the Governor
of Gibraltar. Knowing that any ministerial car would be
changed regularly, he would have to wait a while.

that time. “So,” says Graeme, “I contacted the Chatting with the chief mechanic at the Jaguar
procurement office at the Convent [the Governor’s dealer on Gibraltar, Graeme was advised that it was

sympathetic and eventually was able to confirm the
car was about to come on the market. I was finally
able to take it over in March this year.”
The X350 had been in service for 11 years and
its service book is stamped up appropriately by
Cappuro’s, the Jaguar dealer on the Rock. When
Graeme bought the X350, however, he knew it came
with two problems: the protective rubber gaiters
on top of the shock absorbers were split on all four
corners and it would drop into limp mode from time
to time. Although Graeme couldn’t see the gaiters
at the time, sure enough, when the car was later
jacked up, and the suspension hanging down fully
extended, the damaged gaiters were clear to see.
For the Jaguar dealer in Gibraltar this posed a big
problem because it was under the impression that
it had to buy the entire strut assembly with new
gaiters. The second issue, based on what one of the
Governor’s chauffeurs of the car had told Graeme,
was that there was a faulty air-flow meter sensor, or

Run to Eastbourne on one of the
warmest days of the year [see JW,
August 2017, p95] was the reminder I
needed that I’d never investigated the

Okay, I’d once attempted to put fresh
gas into the system using a kit, but the
gas escaped as soon as I put it in, so I did

The car worked perfectly otherwise, and
investigating defects that wouldn’t render
it undriveable weren’t a top priority.
The journey home from Eastbourne,
though, was quite unpleasant. I got stuck
in a queue on the M11 on a particularly
stuffy evening and, what with the XJ6’s
tiny windows, there was very little
ventilation. Turning the fan on did no more
than distribute already warm air around
the cabin, and I certainly don’t have the Craig’s XJ6 on display at the Bromley Pageant in
