lecturer at the department of Quantity Surveying and Geoinformatics at Obafemi Awolowo University.
Having gone through this training myself a few weeks back, I became aware of huge potentials available
on Amazon platform for eBook and Paperback book creation and publishing. In the next three days, I will
be exposing us to this great resource. Beyond this, there will be opportunity for advanced training for

THE MYSTERY OF WRITING

Before talking about the mystery of writing, let us digress a bit and quickly make a few comments on the
history of book 👇👇,

1. The book was originally a parchment, a rolled manuscript made from the papyrus plant.

2. The Romans developed the manuscript, which was made of wood and animal skins, opened like
a book, and had actual pages.

3. The first book in mass production is the Gutenberg Bible. So, Johannes Gutenberg invented the
Book.

4. It is said that the first real paper book was made in China.
5. It is made from large pulp made of blackberries, hemp, bark and even fish, which can be pressed
and dried into paper. Each piece of paper is about the size of a newspaper and is called "a piece of
paper".

Since then, there has been a great revolution in the field of book publishing and writing especially with
the invention of computer. We are now in the digital age and eBook is now trending.

I will talk about eBook tomorrow.

What is writing?

Writing can be defined as art of communication whereby you symbolize or code your ideas, knowledge
or thoughts on paper or other retrieval medium to pass information in a readable form.

Writing is a language skill like listening, speaking and reading which must be systematically learnt for
effective and comprehensible expression and documentation of our knowledge base.

Writing may involve paraphrasing a previously written or spoken statement or information in your own
words for better clarity.

Writing may also involve a verbatim or direct quotation of another person’s idea or writing. In such an
instance, the primary author must be appropriately acknowledged so as to avoid plagiarism, a
punishable academic offence or intellectual theft

BAD OR GOOD WRITER⁉️

Some books are not properly written and they reflect the competence of the writers.

This training is to assist us to be good writers.

To be a good writer, you need to know how to write well. How to produce STRONG WRITING that will
interest people and make them want to buy your book

We will briefly discuss what strong and purposeful writing is, what a bestseller is, and the different parts
of a good book.

It is not enough to write, you must write and package your book in such a way that propective buyers
cannot buy your books.

This is the goal!

 Since we want non-writers among us to have a good background, I will drop some helpful hints for
them.

Tips for beginners 👇 👇

Write out of passion.

Write on the issue you are passionate about, not necessarily what is trendy.

Learn to write at a stretch, your stream of thought as it comes to mind.

Do not try to edit the first raw stream of your thought..

Editing should come later. This is very important.

Use short and simple sentence structure. Keep it Simple and Short (KISS).

Do not use slangs and abbreviation except it is for specific purpose or emphasis and if you must
use it, put it in inverted comma.

Decide ahead which English grammar you intend to use, American or British style and be
consistent. For example, Americans use one “m” in “program” while the British use “mme” as in
programme

WHAT IS STRONG WRITING⁉️

It connotes that the book:

1. Is very captivating, full of suspense and keeps the reader looking for more.

2. Has the right choice of words, logical sequence and identifiable meaning or message.

3. Can sustain and maintain readers’ interest even when writing about mundane things.

4. Meets both the needs of the writer and that of the largest audience.

5. Satisfy the needs and interest of the audience to the point that they are willing to pay for it at all
cost

QUALITIES OF A WINNING WRITER

1. FOCUS: A winning writer will stay focused on his or her passion despite many available alternatives.
Determination to succeed must be paramount. No jumping from one lane to another but stay on his or
her lane to finish line.

2. TENACITY: A winner must be diligent in keeping to the same vision with the same vigour and
positivity.

3. DOGGEDNESS: A winning writer must remain resilient, relentless and persistent with his or her vision
and dream in order to succeed.
4. GIVE ALL THAT IT WILL TAKE: Your vision or passion deserves your best. Give it everything you've got
and everything it takes. Empty yourself into your vision and see the results thereafter.

5. *COLLABORATION: * You cannot live in isolation of people and make a …

Do you know that a winning writer can also stop writing once in a while? Yes

WHEN DO I STOP WRITING?

A best selling author knows when to write and when to stop writing.

Stop writing when:

1. You notice that you are forcing yourself to think or to write.

2. When writing becomes a struggle. At that moment, stop and do something else. Otherwise, the
quality of your script will be tampered with.

3. Stop writing when you feel you want to increase the volume at all cost or add everything and
anything new or trending that you have heard.. It is not about the length or volume of your book that
matter but the content and the life it carries.

4. Stop writing when you are exhausted! Don't write under fatigue, it can only birth nothing.

A winning writer will ensure that after stopping temporarily, he or she will bounce back to write a
bestseller.

WHAT IS A BESTSELLER⁉️

The simple definition of Bestseller is a book or product that sells in very large numbers relative to other
books in its category within a given time frame.

A book that sells up to 10,000 copies over a specific period of time as determined by the relevant literary
bodies passes for a bestseller. While some also say 1000 copies. It could be in any category: fiction,
inspiration, etc

Can you give some examples of Bestseller Authors you know or you have read their books?

There are guides to writing a bestseller.

 Start with a big idea. Something fresh and interesting. You must find an idea that will get readers
excited to pick up your book. A small idea for a book results in small sales.

 Start immediately because others may have similar idea. No procrastination❗

 Write with the audience in mind. Bestsellers are sticky. The book needs to be written in a way
where it can be easily shared and talked about, because it touches on some universal theme. Stephen
King says you write the first draft with the door closed and the second draft with the door open.

 Edit for clarity, not perfection. Bestsellers are clear. Take out all the clutter that distracts your
reader from the true message

A good book must have basic parts and sections which should include the following:

 Title/ cover page

 Copyright page (the Authorization given to the author)

 Barcode (Bar codes are found at the Back cover of a book, basically at the rear after the Author’s
Biography).

 Dedication page where the writer tells the reason for which the book was written

 Acknowledgement page (Talks about all those that assisted in making the book a reality).

 Epigraph, prologue (a short writing of an introduction to part of a book)

 Table of contents (A guide to the various chapters contained in the book.

 Introduction (written after all the chapters have been completed and not before). It is the
chapter that talks about the ent…

I hope everyone understands the assignment about forming your own note from this training material.

Online Publication can be any document that is published online. Example is the JAMB result that we
are all familiar with.

Others may include magazines, newspapers E book publication is a book that is published online.
There are specific standards that an e-book must attain before it can be qualified to be called a book.

WHAT IS E-BOOK?

 Simply put, E-Book means Electronic Book.

 E-Book is writing and publishing made available in digital form through electronic media/
medium in order to reach a wider audience instead of hard copy or as an extension of the hard copy.

 It is a book in electronic format, that is not physically handled but can only be read on a
computer or handheld device.

 Many titles which are available in printed versions can be read as e-books, including bestselling
fiction, classics and reference texts.

In summary, an e-book is a non-editable book that is converted and published online so it could be read
on our computer or other handheld devices.

E-book creation and publishing is a high income skill that would ever be needed at this time and age
because of its extensive personal and extended benefits.

We have talked about E-Book. Now let us consider something else related to it.

What is Paperback?

 Most of us are familiar with Paperback book. That is tangible object, the book you hold with
your hands or place on a surface to read.

 Paper back to an extent can be said to be the opposite of the ebook in the sense that you can
physically see and hold the book unlike the ebook that you can only access digitally.

 Paperback is a book published in print form and with soft cover.

 Paperback is a book that is bound with a soft paper covering as opposed to hard cover binding.

Formatting is the visual layout of your document in a presentable manner. It includes the fonts and the
size used, the borders, the orientation etc.

It is an accepted pattern or layout regarding a written document. It guides you in building your book in
preparation for your E-Book Creation and Publishing.

The written document is your manuscript. This is written and laid down in Microsoft Word.

For Amazon Publishing, the formatting has been made very easy for every publisher through the use of
a specific TEMPLATE

What is a template?

Template is a particular laid down pattern widely accepted, that must be followed when publishing
either a hard copy or E-Book.

A template is a physical object whose shape is used as a guide to make other objects.

It is a generic model or pattern from which other objects are based or derived.

There are advantages in using a template.

1. You will follow a specific and an acceptable structure while writing.

2. It affords you the opportunity to write faster and better hence you save time.

Today, we shall learn how to format our manuscript to the standard required by Amazon. How is this
done?

We will be using an Amazon TEMPLATE for the formatting. It is called CREATESPACE.

For this formatting, we would need the notes for this class. You need to have the notes in Microsoft
Word format. It is the Microsoft Word Document that will be formatted. This MS format is very
important!!!!

THE NOTES I AM ASKING YOU TO FORM FROM THE LECTURES ARE VERY IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY FOR
THOSE WHO MAY WANT TO PROCEED AFTER THIS BASIC CLASS TO THE MASTERS CLASS. ❗ ❗😀

IT WILL MAKE THE MASTER’S CLASS EXTREMELY EASY FOR YOU!

THE TYPED NOTES SHOULD BE IN GARAMOND FONT AND SIZE 11 OR 12 OR TIMES NEW ROMAN FONT

GOING PRACTICAL

WE WILL NOW GO TO BASIC PRACTICAL STEPS TO FORMATTING.

FOR EXAMPLE, FORMATTING A WORD DOCUMENT FOR CONVERSION INTO AN E-BOOK

There are steps to take and follow

STEP 1. Set your page and margin. (trim paper size to 6"×9")

STEP 2. Choose suitable styles and customize same. (Either Garamond Font style and Font size 11; or
Times New Roman Font style and Font size 13.5 is acceptable at the Amazon platform)

STEP 3. Format the interiors - Chapters. Start a chapter on a new page.

STEP 4. Fix your cover designate: Title

STEP 5. Do pagination

STEP 6. Headers fixation

STEP 7. Extras: footers

STEP 8. Add images if available

STEP 9. Table of Contents (TOC)

STEP 10. Proof and conversion from Microsoft Word (MS) to PDF.

Once these steps are followed correctly, you are good to E-book! ✍️✍️✍️😀😀😀

YOU NEED TO TRIM YOUR MANUSCRIPT PROPERLY HOW TO TRIM YOUR PAPER SIZE

To trim to the universally accepted of 6"×9", do the following:

1. Go to Home Page

2. Click on "Page Layout"

3. Click on Size, above "Page Set Up" to open the dialogue box.

4. Click on "More Paper Sizes" to open up another dialogue box.

5. Adjust Default Paper Size under "Letter" to 6"×9"(width and length).

You may try to choose 'CUSTOM' for your paper sizing. Then, you manually type the size required either
in inches or centimetres (6 inches = 15.24 cm and 9 inches = 22.86 cm).

There are basic areas to pay attention to when formatting your manuscript.

Amazon has various templates but our main concern is the basic template for writing e-book, formatting
and publishing.

For beginners, Amazon provides an appropriate template

It has the following headings:

1. Cover page

2. Copyright page

3. Dedication

4. Acknowledgement

5. Table of content

6. Introduction

7. Body (chapters)

8. Back page (blurb/about the author). The Blurb is a short description about the content of the
book for promotional purposes.

Every book is structured this way. However, you can modify the order from items 3 to 5.

The ideal minimum pages your ebook should have is twenty (24) pages. This will greatly help when you
go ahead to create a paperback version of the book in the Amazon account.

We are going to use the basic Template to Format our prepared manuscript for Amazon tonight.

For the benefit of those who have not trimmed their manuscript, please let us spend extra 2 minutes
doing that. It is very crucial to know how to do that.

Meanwhile, those who have trimmed their documents should go ahead and export the class chat to our
email box. After which we download and make our notes from the exported chats.

You can as well use any document on your laptop to do the formatting. Later, you can prepare your
notes well for final publishing especially at the Advanced level (Master's class). AMAZON CREATESPACE
FORMATTING TEMPLATE

Please, download the above forwarded document on your computer. It is an Amazon formatting
template called CREATESPACE We are going to use it to format our prepared manuscript

What we are doing is hand-on training. Don't just read the chats without doing something.

To be able to publish your books on Amazon, you have to create an account on Amazon

UPON MANUAL FORMATTING OF YOUR BOOK USING THE BASIC FORMATTING METHOD OF THE
CREATESPACE TEMPLATE, YOU OPEN A KDP ACCOUNT AT THE WEBSITE kdp.amazon.com WHERE YOU
UPLOAD AND PUBLISH YOUR BOOK FOR THE WHOLE WORLD TO SEE WITHIN.

KDP- Stands for Kindle Direct Publishing.

KDP is easy to use with interactive interface that guides writer as you attempt to publish your
manuscript.

Open a new browser and type kdp.amazon.com

If you already had an Amazon account as at step 1 above, then you will click on " sign in " and
enter your sign in details.

2. For those who are opening a new account, you click on sign up and enter your details correctly.

3. Click on create to get your account.

4. Enter your email address and choose a password.

An OTP code will be sent to your email or phone for verification.

Let us do this in the next 3 minutes

Are we working on opening an account now? Let me have your responses.

5. Enter the OTP code quickly and it will grant you access to your account

6. Read and agree to the terms and conditions.

7. But if the response says your account info is incomplete

8. Go ahead and click update now

9.Getting paid. Please choose the “I don’t have a bank” option. Nigerian banks are not yet accepted, so
we receive cheques. A way of getting round this will be treated in the Master Class.

10. In opting for payments as a Nigerian resident, choosing a pay check which will be delivered to
you in your provided address is a better option, you can still check to see what other options are
available and select which best suits your location.

Moreover, if you have someone in the U.S who you trust and whose account could be used. No qualms!
Go ahead!

11. For those abroad, go ahead to input your bank details.

AFTER THIS, MOVE ON TO TAX INFORMATION.

12. Click on tax information, then it prompts you to save and continue. This takes you to another page.

13. Choose the following options: Individual classification. No, you are not a U.S. person. No, you’re not
an agent.

14. Tax identity info. You should see your name, select your country. Edit the address if your mailing
address if different.

15. TIN. Means Tax Identity Number. If you pay taxes and have TIN, tick “I have a Non-US TIN”. If you
DON'T have, uncheck the boxes and choose “I could not/have not obtained TIN from my local
authorities because of other reason.”

16. Sign and submit. Append your name as signature then save and preview.

17. It takes you to preview your tax certificate. Make changes if any, otherwise submit form.

18. If validated, download certificate and exit interview.
