JOSÉ SARNEY was born in Pinheiro, in the state of Maranhão, on April 24, 1930.
Degree in Juridical and Social Sciences, Law School of Maranhão.
Married to Marly Macieira Sarney.
Three children: Roseana Sarney Murad, Fernando José Macieira Sarney, and José Sarney Filho.
Political Activities
– Member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (since 1980), Member of the Maranhão Academy
of Letters (since 1952), and Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (1986).
– Columnist and commentator in the newspapers Diário de Pernambuco and Correio do Ceará,
magazines Senhor, Cruzeiro, and Ilha, Maranhão (1948), and newspapers Jornal do Brasil, O
Globo, O Estado do Maranhão, and Folha de S. Paulo; in the latter he has been writing a weekly
column since 1982.
– Member of the organization InterAction Council, established by Takeo Fukuda (Japan) and
Helmut Schmidt (Germany) that gathers 40 former Heads of State and Heads of Government.
