Answer-1
It is about the time about 9 years ago when I was in 8th standard, the time when I faced one of the
very serious ethical dilemmas as a teenager.
I was attempting an exam, where I was facing difficulties and the questions were not that simple
and easy going, difficult to understand and was given less time to solve the questions and I was
panicking. It was question on quadratic equations which was difficult and I was not able to
understand the chapter in depth, being prepared from crust level did not helped me at all that day.
I went to washroom where I saw a senior telling how to solve to solve the problem to some of my
fellow mates, I thought of going there because it was tempting, I could have scored 5 more marks
and ask for help but then I realized that NO, I am not here for some help, I am not here to cheat,
that’s not how my parents raised, what if I cannot solve one question, life is not going to end here if I
score a little less.
I thought of my parents at that moment that what my father used to say & still says the same thing,
if you cheat, you are ordinary, but you don’t, that’s what make you a unique person. Now it is on
you whether you want to be a strong and a unique person or a simple person just like others. My
teachers considered me a very innocent and an ethical person, that is what I was, I cannot change
for just one question because it’s better to fail than to cheat.
I even asked my friends that instead of on focusing on one question which you will use your time to
do, invest the time in perfecting other answer but they did not agree, except for one. I was happy
that because of me, I was able to knock some sense in one my closest friends, rest of them said that
you are idiot if you are not doing so, “you will be getting 5 more marks friend, its okay”, but I stood
firm at my decision.
Later when I went back, I did all the problems and tried it at the end. Not entire, but yes, I was able
to solve 1st part of that question and realized it that I was not able to think under the time pressure
and keeping the mind cool will help.
I was happy that what did today was all on my own, all my hard-work I put it was worth. I told the
incident to my mother, the same question was asked by my mother as well, that why you not do it,
I told what my father told 2 days ago and marks does not matter a lot further in life, but who you
are, your attitude does matter a lot, that’s how a person should practice being ethical.
I would like to give myself a score of 9/10 because I think it was the best way to handle the
situation as I was also a very young teen, was tempted to score more by unethical means, which I
think is natural, and don’t think that can be improved.

We are all encouraged to make ethical choices and apply ethics in all areas of our lives. But what
does ethics mean, and why do ethics matter for business?

We can think of ethics as the principles that guide our behaviour toward making the best choices that
contribute to the common good of all. Ethics is what guides us to tell the truth, keep our promises, or
help someone in need.

This story is about the time when I was in my undergraduate program, just passed 12 th standard and I
used to go to Delhi daily to attend my college. Being into fitness I wanted to go to gym as all my
friends were gymming, and parents used to tell us that focus on your studies till 12 th & do these
things later.

I started going to gym, the diet which trainer told to follow was little bit costly, so I decided to earn a
little money at least to fulfil my travel and diet expenses.

Later I started working as a freelance/ independent contractor in an organization. Couple of months

later, I found a problem that was not being detected and I did not know that whether the company is
aware of this issue or not.

I also could have done the work using that method and I did for 2 months. Later I realised that it is
not good and company might get incorrect information and we are not being paid for doing unethical
practices, being a responsible person, I mailed them the issue and asked them to resolve it asap,
otherwise they might get into a big trouble. Very few people were aware of this problem and some of
them even used the unethical means to do so.

They reverted back saying that “we are very well aware of the issue, and it was so generous of you to
inform” & even gave me incentive as well as extended my contract for 3 months for this ethical
doing.

I would like to give myself a score of 7/10 as I feel that I should not have done the unethical work
even for 2 months, and there is a need for improvement.
