Q1)

Individual case of dilemma

This incident which I’m writing below is a true incident that happened in my life in December 2020.

I was in my seventh semester of my engineering and was working very vigorously on my final year
project. My project was completely based on Research. I was working on a material, and it was going
well. I had several meetings with my HOD, and the project guide and the pace of the project was also
high. In the first week of December, I had planned to visit SDMIMD and meet Gururaj sir regarding
some clarifications for the admission and visit this beautiful campus. As planned, I visited the college
and returned to Bangalore on the same day. In the meantime, I had given an interview for one of the
software companies for a role of GET. The next day after returning from Mysore I had my pre final
presentations for my project. I was well prepared and oversaw the entire happenings of the project,
so I prepared my presentation and was on full swing to present my research. In the early morning i
heard my parents calling me downstairs which was completely unusual to me. My Father told me
that he had some chest pain since 4:00am. So, I had to take him to the hospital for consultation.
It was diagnosed as a serious case of Hyper acidity, and they told to admit him immediately. I too
him to the best place available and admitted him. While everything was happening, I get mail and
call saying that I had a placement offer and had to come and collect my offer letter. I was not able to
give my presentation on that day. Here I had 3 options
A) To take care of my Father as he was in pain
B) To give my presentation as I was working for the last 6 months
C) To get my offer letter which was the happiest day in my life

Looking up to all the options I had to choose the first option as said family comes first
Also, I had conversations with my HOD and placement officer the next day and explained them the
situation.
In my case the stakeholders are my family, my college, my project guid, my HOD and the company
that I was placed

Connecting to model of theory of ethics

Personal ethics are often a set of beliefs specific to an individual and based upon experience, family,
and community. For example, you may hold strong beliefs about honesty, integrity, and
responsibility.
Transparency

Transparency involves accurately representing facts, telling a truth in its entirety, and
communicating clearly and openly about everything that happened on that day. It is the foundation
of a strong relationship with all the stakeholders mentioned above. This was done by me in the
immediate next day.

Integrity
Sticking with a decision, especially when pressured to do otherwise, shows honor and courage. I had
to do what the situation believe is morally right based on equality and fairness can demonstrate
strength and commendable character.

Trustworthiness
I had to keep up the trust of all the stakeholders that keep promises and fulfil to display
commitment to business ethics. Trustworthiness is a monumental component

Loyalty
Being loyal to my family where I was born and brought was the most important thing I could be

Fairness
Also, fairness relates to equality, which means having an open mind and treating everyone fairly. I
did not have a fair move as far as my college sees

Compassion
Ethical companies demonstrate genuine kindness, understanding and care for the livelihood of
others. this means accomplishing goals to produce the best while causing the least amount of
damage. When a decision needs to be made, careful consideration of the options and how each one
may affect a person or community helps reduce the potential negative impacts, depending on the
industry.

Respect
Having basic respect for the rights, privacy and dignity of people—including individuals within and
outside the company—is an important business ethical standard.
Respect also relates to client or customer privacy since companies are held to the ethical standard of
keeping information such as bank account details, health background or social security numbers
private.

Responsibility
responsibility to lead with the values and mission of the organization to make logical decisions that
benefit everyone. Here I was biased in my personal life

Reputation upholding
An ethical person seeks to maintain and protect a positive reputation to build a motivating work
culture, keep investors engaged. Upholding a good reputation means engaging in conduct those
uplifts.

 Accountability
This means to accept responsibility for all decisions made by me and admit their mistakes to all of
those who may be affected by a misstep including shareholders. In addition to taking accountability,
they also accept any consequences that result and do so transparently.
On a score of 10 I would rate myself 6.5

Q2) I was staying in a guest house for a few days with my family, and it was overflowing
with books. Bookshelves filled every room, each filled with more books than it could
hold. Nearly all of them were old, I started poring through them for hours on end, awed
by the extent of treasure lying around in this house in the woods as if it was nothing. The
gentleman who had owned this house and these books had died several years ago, and
his family had presumably turned it into a guesthouse without going through the
treasure trove that was his library.

One evening, I was browsing the books in one of the comfortable living rooms that had
some couches and a blazing fire, when I came across a set of more recent books that
were by a scholar and literary critic whom I greatly admire. At the time, I considered him
to be my hero. Although I had read many of the books, I started taking some of them
down and looking through them. I will not say this scholar’s name, but I am certain many
of you know who I am referring to; as it happens, he was extremely famous in his field
until his recent death.

To my total astonishment, the books were filled with handwritten letters that the scholar
had written to the former owner. They were long and detailed, often filled with personal
details that I, who had done a lot of research about my hero, had never come across. I
looked through all the books and removed all the letters; there were around a dozen in
total. I read through them all and it became clear that the former owner had been close
friends with the scholar; they had stayed at each other’s home’s multiple times. It is
difficult to describe exactly how elated I felt on finding these letters. Imagine your
greatest hero, dead or alive, and then finding a set of intensely personal letters by him or
her that have never been read by the public, and you will know how I felt.

I read and re-read them many times over my trip, and eventually took photos of each of
them with my phone. But I was then left with my dilemma: it was clear the present
owners had no knowledge of these letters’ existence, whereas for me they would be my
greatest possession. To cut a long story short, I brought back one of the letters, and left
the others together neatly in one of the scholar’s books.

When I returned home and time passed, I started feeling worse and worse about what I
can only call my theft.

In This case I was very sad about my behaviour and was under constant prick of my
activities.

Here my stake holders are myself, the owner of the guest house and the scholar

Without the knowledge of the owner had seen all the letters written and also had taken
one of them with me back

Here I was not transparent nor was I trustworthy, accountable of my action

This is pure case that if I reveal about the events, I will lose the reputation and will not be
able to show my face to anyone as it was unethical on my part to do this.

This might look like a small event but when we look from a broad perspective I could
have talked about the events and apologised for my mistakes.

I’m this case I would rate myself 3 on 10.
