Question 2:
I would like to discuss on the ethical dilemma which I faced in the XYZ bank where I was
working as a junior relationship officer in the gold loan Department in my own hometown.
The people I was supposed to report was sales manager Mr. Sanjay Palekar regarding the
gold loan cases (Business) and also to operation head and Branch manager.
In between all this there was gold loan officer who use to do all the processing work. He was
experience person I was newly joined there it was my first job, so I din had much of idea
about how the work life was to be.
So, in gold loan there are 3 types:
1)New loan: Customer taking new loan
2)Renew or top up(optional): Renewing the existing loan
3)Closure: Closing the loan ac by paying the amount.
One day as usual I was doing the gold loan closure so as per the procedure customer came on
the given time slot all the documents were cleared and the gold packet was opened to return
the jewelry of that person and the gold was hand over to the customer by the concerned
authority. So after that my work was to do the filing and send it to the main office so I
collected all the documents and the empty packet and while doing all this I found a piece of
gold remained in it by mistake by the authority so I went to the Gold loan officer to informed
he was not even concerned about customers property he told me to keep it there only and give
the packet in filing, So now it was my duty to inform it to higher department so the corrective
measures will be taken.
I had 2 options
 Either to listen to the gold loan officer and keep it there on his table and his behavior
clearly showed that he will keep it for himself, he was not even concern about the
customer.
 Second was to go to higher authority and complain about it.
So, as I said above, I choose second option I went to operations head who was main in charge
of the branch I told her the whole story she connected with the customer, told him that by
mistake their belonging remained with us and to collect it. Operations head appreciated me
for my ethics and sincerity towards my profession and also for going against senior with
having guts when it was needed. And necessary actions were taken against that person who
tried to do the fraud.
And because of this I rate myself as 8/10.
Primarily it is the individual, the consumer, the employee, or the human social unit of the
society who benefits from ethics. In addition, ethics is important because of the following:

1. Satisfying Basic Human Needs: Being fair, honest and ethical is one the basic
human needs. Every employee desires to be such himself and to work for an
organization that is fair and ethical in its practices.
2. Creating Credibility: An organization that is believed to be driven by moral values
is respected in the society even by those who may have no information about the
working and the businesses or an organization. Infosys, for example is perceived as an
organization for good corporate governance and social responsibility initiatives. This
perception is held far and wide even by those who do not even know what business
the organization is into.
3. Uniting People and Leadership: An organization driven by values is revered by its
employees also. They are the common thread that brings the employees and the
decision makers on a common platform. This goes a long way in aligning behaviors
within the organization towards achievement of one common goal or mission.
4. Improving Decision Making: A man’s destiny is the sum total of all the decisions
that he/she takes in course of his life. The same holds true for organizations.
Decisions are driven by values. For example an organization that does not value
competition will be fierce in its operations aiming to wipe out its competitors and
establish a monopoly in the market.
5. Securing the Society: Often ethics succeeds law in safeguarding the society. The law
machinery is often found acting as a mute spectator, unable to save the society and the
environment. Technology, for example is growing at such a fast pace that the by the
time law comes up with a regulation we have a newer technology with new threats
replacing the older one. Lawyers and public interest litigations may not help a great
deal but ethics can.
6. Long Term Gains: Organizations guided by ethics and values are profitable in the
long run, though in the short run they may seem to lose money. Tata group, one of the
largest business conglomerates in India was seen on the verge of decline at the
beginning of 1990’s, which soon turned out to be otherwise. The same company’s
Tata NANO car was predicted as a failure and failed to do well but the same is
picking up fast now.

Ethics tries to create a sense of right and wrong in the organizations and often when the law
fails, it is the ethics that may stop organizations from harming the society or environment.
