Midterm examination - semester (Jan-May 2017)
‘Time: 120 minutes Maximum Marks: 60
(i) Assume any missing data
Answer all questions, each question carries 10 marks,
(iii) Draw neat sketches wherever necessary
(iy) g=9.81 mis, yu = 9810 Nim’, | ft = 0.3048 m, Specific gravity (Sz) of water = 1.0
(v) No queries are allowed during the exam,
|. A shaft 70.0 mm in diameter is being rotated at 2000 rpm through a bearing sleeve 70.2 mm in
diameter and 250 mm long. The clearance assumed to be uniform and is filled with oil at 20° C
with kinematic viscosity, v = 0.005 m'/s and specific gravity (Sg) ~0.9. Find the force exerted by
the oil on this shaft and power required to rotate the shaft. (Formula to compute power = shear
force x radius of shaft),
2. A rectangular gate inclined at 30° with water on one side. The gate dimensions are 4 m wide
and 5 m deep. Vertical depth of water over top edge is 8 m, Compute resultant force and location
of center of pressure
3. A wooden barge (Sg = 0.61) 4.0 m wide, 20 m long and 6,0 m deep floating in oil (Se = 0.85),
compute its metacentric height to determine stability
4. A two dimensional velocity field is given by V = (x? — 2y2 + 2x)i — Bxy + y?)j.
(2) Ata point (1, 1) compute acceleration components a, and ay (b) Compute velocity components
in the direction 8=60°. (c) Determine directions of maximum acceleration and maximum velocity
5A sluice gate is installed across a canal of width B and flow depth H, Find the forces on the
Sluice gate for following conditions (a) sluice gate opens half depth (b) sluice gate completely
closed.
6. A 45° reducing bend is connected to a pipeline, the diameters at the inlet and outlet of the bend
is 600 mm and 300 mm respectively. Find the forces (F, , , and resultant force and angle made
by resultant force with x-axis) exerted by water on the bend if the intensities of pressure at inlet
and outlet are 8.829 x 10* Nim? and 5.45 x 10 N/m? and flowrate is 600 iters/second, Neglect
Weight of the bend and frictional losses in the bend.
