Lab session 1

Title:
Introduction to computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) and Role of different Engineers in CIM.

Manufacturing:
Manufacturing is a process of conversion of raw material into useful products.

Manufacturing system:
A manufacturing system is a set of people machines computers that works and interact together to
perform the desired manufacturing process.

A manufacturing system also of types, it can be:

➢ Manual

➢ Worker-machine

➢ Automated

In the present era we are using computers for multiple helpful purposes such as:

➢ CAD (computer aided design)

➢ CAM (computer aided manufacturing)

➢ CAT (computer aided testing)

➢ CATD (computer aided tool design)

➢ CIM (computer integrated manufacturing)

CIM:

Computer integrated manufacturing denotes to the use of computers to control a production

process. The term "computer-integrated manufacturing" is both a method of manufacturing and the
name of a computer-automated system in which individual engineering, production, marketing, and
support functions of a manufacturing enterprise are organized.
CIM involves:

➢ Design

➢ Prototyping

➢ CAM

➢ Quality control

➢ Product assembly using robots

➢ Quality check using automated storage

Role of different engineers in CIM:

A mechatronics engineer is quite helpful in CIM because he has a grip over mechanical, electrical,
computer and in software skills to work with smart technologies.

An Industrial engineer has a strong grip over manufacturing processes to be used in industries for
product manufacturing. He also builds a complete strategy of control system of whole processes. He
makes a managerial plan to keep the process running with maximum efficiency. He sets the pace of
work by observing the material of product and type of manufacturing process for better efficiency even
the process is computer integrated controlled.

Further discussion:
Several points are also discussed during the lab session:

1. An assignment is to be done (will be given)

2. Complex Engineering problem (demonstrated)

CEP demonstration:

➢ A manufacturing industry is to visit.

➢ Observation of manufacturing process.

➢ Suggestion of any CIM technology to them if necessary and required

➢ An assessment report of our work is also required, signed by industry’s Engineer
