Activity Title:
Hand and Arm Massage

Key Concept

The hands contains many acupressure and reflexology points which are associated with the organs and
certain parts of the body. Therefore hand massage should be included with each
Manicure because it provides significant health benefit.

Before performing a service that includes a hand and/or arm massage, consult the client’s
consultation card or intake form. During the consultation acknowledge and discuss any medical
condition your client listed that may be contraindicated for a massage. If they have not discussed
massage with their physician, encourage them to do so before performing the service.

Many clients who have high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, or circulatory conditions may
still have hand and/or arm massage without concern, especially if their condition is being
treated by a physician. Hand and/or arm massage is, however, contraindicated for clients with
severe, uncontrolled hypertension. Avoid using vigorous or strong massage techniques on clients
who have arthritis. Do not talk to your client during the massage except to ask once whether your © Milady, a part of Cengage Learning. Photography by Dino Petrocelli.

touch should be more or less firm. Talking disturbs the relaxation therapy of the massage.
When making decisions about whether to perform a massage on a person who has a medical
condition, be conservative. When in doubt, don’t include massage as part of your service.

Basic Hand and Arm Massage Techniques

1. Before performing a hand and arm massage, make sure that you are sitting in a comfortable position and
are not stretching or leaning forward toward your customer. Your posture should be correct and relaxed,
and your feet should be parallel and flat on the floor. Sitting or working in an uncomfortable or strained
position can cause back, neck and shoulder injuries.

2. Be sure to hold the client’s hand or arm loosely without too much restraint during the massage.

A firm but gentle, slow, and rhythmic movement in a predictable routine is the key to a relaxing massage.
Moving quickly sends the message to the client that you are hurrying to get the massage over and do not
care about providing a good service.
3. If more cream, oil, or lotion is needed during the massage, always leave one hand on the
client’s hand or arm and retrieve more product with the other. Having your product in a pump
container facilitates this important massage technique.

4. Perform the movements several times slowly and rhythmically on each hand or arm and repeat because this is
relaxing to the client. Perform the full massage on one arm—palm, back of hand, arm—repeating the gliding
movements on each arm several times with transition movements in between. Now, move to the other
hand/arm, starting over in the routine you have developed.

Caution:

Take care not to press or move with pressure over the bones of the arms as this can be
quite painful.

Activity Title:
Nail Art Technique

Key Concepts

Types of Nail Art Techniques

Nail art is associated with the art of drawing or painting different types of patterns on the nails.
There are assorted techniques to jazz up your nails with exclusive nail art decor. Nail art can be
categorized based on these techniques. It has gained hell lot of popularity and now is trending part of
vogue. Nail art techniques include sponging, taping, painting or drawing with brushes, digital nail art,
etc. Below you can find these and more explained coherently.

1. Painting with a brush

This technique is like any other
painting where one can use a variety of
brushes, which are most suitable.

2. Sponge Bobbing
 used for getting gradient and
achromatic kind of designs on
nails
 The finishing you get after using
sponge would likely be sprinkled
and bespattered
 Usually, the base coat is applied,
and it is left to dry, and then
sponge with nail polish is used
and applied on the nails
 You can position sponge amiably
or swiftly, as per the design you
intend to make
 To remove extra edges, a
chemical product called acetone
can be used

3. Stamping Looks Great

 As far as nail stamping technique
is concerned, first the image
which is printed on the nail needs
to be covered by the stumpy layer
of special nail paints in the image
plate
 Later you can use scraper rigidly
across so that only nail polish is
seen as a residual in the pattern

4. Taping is Not a Task

 A base color is initially applied on
the nails, and then the tape is cut
into small pieces and later applied
to the nails
 The tiny pieces of tapes are
applied to those areas of nails
which are to be left in the base
color itself
 Then, you can apply the next coat
of the color you wish to apply on
the unified nail
 Lastly, you can remove the tape
gently

5. Digi World Nail Art

 Nowadays, digital nail art
machines have come up
 These machines are more often
used with the therapists or beauty
salon
 The procedure is automated, and
therefore it takes very less time to
get the desired nail art look
 You can also get the scanned
photographs or pictures from
digital cameras for printing on the
nails
 These machines are quite
expensive

6. Stencil Method
 One can make use of stencils
which are implanted on the dry
coat of nail polish and acts as the
background for the image of the
stencil.
 Then the stencil is placed strictly
against the nails. Like we do in
taping, the entire nail is painted
with a different colored nail polish
 Then, after some time, when it
dries, the stencil is removed,
thereby constructing the pattern
like the stencil

7. Airbrush Nail Art Technique

 used for drizzling paint on nails
 combined with stencils or stickers
to get the desired look
 First, a base coat is applied, then
the stencil can allocate on the nail
and the airbrush machine is made
in use for painting the wishful
design
 Later the stencil is slightly
removed, and acetone is used for
taking out the paint if got split in
certain cases
8. Splatter Nails
 One can use a fan brush stroke to
make hip looking splatter nails,
but the home remedy for this
could be using an old toothbrush
for the same effect.
 You will get a cool, splashy,
colorful nail graffiti look with this,
thereby avoiding all the mess
through paint.

9. Sharpie Nail Art

 Sharpie nails have the
resemblance to watercolor
paintings, and they actually look
lovely.
 One can also use this sharpies’
technique to make smart and
precise designs
 Make sure that the design you
are wishing for getting fully dry
before you add on the final top
coat, or else you’ll smudge
everything here and there, ruining
all your time and energy.
