As one of the most influential scientists of the 19th century, Michael Faraday
took inspiration from the work of Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted, who
realized in 1820 that an electric current could be changed into a magnetic force. This
discovery led to Faraday's Law and the first electromagnetic direct current (DC)
generator called Faraday's disk.

2.Alternator: is known as the “Genhead”, making up a part of the generator that

produces the electrical output from the mechanical input supplied by the engine. It
contains an assembly of stationary and moving parts encased in a housing. The
components work together to cause relative movement between the magnetic and
electric fields, which in turn generates electricity.

7
Stator – Stationary component which contains a set of electrical conductors
wound in coils over iron ore.
Rotor / Armature – Moving component that produces a rotating magnetic field
through 1) Induction, 2) Permanent magnets, 3) Using an exciter.
The rotor generates a moving magnetic field around the stator, which induces a
voltage difference between the windings of that stator. This produces the alternating
current (AC) output of the generator.

3.Fuel System – Fuel tank usually has sufficient capacity

to keep the generator operational for 6 – 8 hours on an
average. In the case of small generator units, the fuel tank
is a part of the generator’s skid base. For commercial
applications, it may be necessary to erect and install an

4. Voltage Regulator – Regulates the output voltage of the generator. The

mechanism is described as each component regulates the output voltage of the
generator. The mechanism is described below against each component that plays a
part in the cyclical process of voltage regulation.
➢ Voltage regulator: converts AC voltage to DC current.
➢ Exciter windings: converts DC current to AC current.
➢ otating rectifiers: converts AC current to DC current.
➢ Rotor / Armature: converts DC current to AC voltage.

5.Cooling and Exhaust Systems – continuous

usage of the generator causes its various
components to get heated up. It is essential to have
a cooling and ventilation system to withdraw heat
produced.

➢ Exhaust system – exhaust fumes emitted by a generator are just like exhaust

from any other diesel or gasoline engine and contain highly toxic chemicals that
need to be properly managed. Hence, it is essential to install an adequate
exhaust system to dispose of the exhaust gases.

8
6.Lubrication System – Since the generator comprises moving parts in its engine, it
requires lubrication to ensure durability and smooth operations for a long period of
time. The generator’s engine is lubricated by oil stored in a pump.

7.Battery Charger – The start function of a generator is battery-operated. The battery

charger keeps the generator battery charged by supplying it with a precise ‘float’
voltage.

8.Control Panel – The user interface of the

generator and contains provisions for electrical
outlets and controls. Different manufacturers
have varied features to offer in the control panels
of their units. Some of the main features are:
➢ Electric starts and shut-down. Auto start
control panels automatically start your

the

generator while in operation and automatically shut down the unit when no longer
required.
➢ Engine gauges – different gauges indicate important parameters such as oil
pressure, the temperature of the coolant, battery voltage, engine rotation speed
and duration of operation, constant measurement and monitoring of these
parameters enables the built-in shut down of the generator when any of these
cross their respective threshold levels.
➢ Generator gauges – control panel also has meters for the measurement of
output current, voltage, and operating frequency.
➢ Other controls – phase selector switch, frequency switch and engine control
switch (manual mode, auto mode) among others.

9. Main Assembly / Frame – All generators, portable or stationary have customized

housings that provide structural base support. The frame also allows the generator to
be earthed for safety.

KEEP THIS IN MIND
https://backgrounddecision.com/employment-screening/assessment-test-icon/

In electricity generation, a generator is a device that converts motive power

(mechanical energy) into electrical power for use in an external circuit. Sources of
mechanical energy include steam turbines, gas turbines, water turbines, internal
combustion engines, wind turbines and even hand cranks.

The reverse conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy is done by

an electric motor, and motors and generators have many similarities.

What Makes the Generators Turn?

Generators don’t actually create electricity.
Instead, they convert mechanical or chemical energy
into electrical energy. They do this by capturing the
power of motion and turning it into electrical energy by
forcing electrons from the external source through an
electrical circuit. A generator is essentially an electrical
motor working in reverse.

generator converts this mechanical energy into electricity.

The operation of a generator is based on the principles
discovered by Faraday. He found that when a magnet is moved past a conductor, it causes
electricity to flow. In a large generator, electromagnets are made by circulating direct
current through loops of wire wound around stacks of magnetic steel laminations. These
are called field poles, and are mounted on the perimeter of the rotor. The rotor is attached
to the turbine shaft, and rotates at a fixed speed. When the rotor turns, it causes the field
poles (the electromagnets) to move past the conductors mounted in the stator. This, in
turn, causes electricity to flow and a voltage to develop at the generator output terminals."
Residential and commercial generators, however, are much smaller and rely on more
traditional fuel sources like diesel, gas, and propane to create mechanical power that can
then be forced into a circuit and induce an electrical current.

11
Once an electrical current has been established, it is directed through copper wires to
power external machines, devices, or entire electrical systems.
Modern generators can be attributed to Michael Faraday’s principle of electromagnetic
induction. Faraday discovered that when a conductor moves in amagnetic field, electrical
charges could be created and directed to create a flow of current. At its most basic, an
electrical generator is nothing more than an electromagnet – moving wire near a magnet to
direct the flow of electricity. It’s similar to how a pump pushes water through a pipe.

Advantages of Electric Motors:

Long Life: As electric motors contain a few moving parts, thus they have a good
operational life span. For example, a correctly selected electric motor, which is
maintained properly can offer up to 30,000 hours of service.
Low Initial Cost: Electric motor has considerably lower initial cost than a fossil-
fuel engine with the same output horsepower rating.
High Efficiency: Electric motors are highly efficient with ratings, which depend
on the size of motor size, and its operating conditions.
Durable: Electric motors have extensive operating life, and are durable. They
have minimal service requirements.

Advantages of Electric Generators:

Minimal Loss: Power outages are the main cause of ruining chilled or frozen
merchandize. This can result in significant loss for businesses. Electric
generators work as alternative power source, and they protect the merchandise
during the power outage.
Increased Safety: In several situations, electricity is important for convenience,
as well as safety. Keeping spaces well-lit during power outages will help prevent
people from tripping and injuring themselves in the dark.

Types of Electric Generators

The classification of electric generators depend on the type of electrical energy that is
produced, which is either direct current or alternating current.

• An alternating current (ac) generator is a device that produces a potential

difference. A simple ac generator consists of a coil of wire rotating in a
magnetic field. Cars use a type of ac generator called an alternator to keep the
battery charged and to run the electrical system while the engine is working.

• AC generators are

are limited to 25kW.

principle of energetically induced electromotive force.

• DC generators: These generators are divided

It consists of a rectangular coil with a number of copper wires wound over an

iron core. The coil is called the armature. It is used to increase the magnetic flux. A
strong permanent magnet is placed and the armature is rotated between the magnets
where the magnetic lines are perpendicular to the axis of the armature. There are two
slip rings connected to the arms of the armature. They are used to provide movable
contact. Two metallic brushes are connected to the slip rings to pass current from the
armature to the slip rings. The current is passed through a load resistance, which is
connected across the slip rings.

At different time intervals, the position of the armature keeps changing. When
the magnetic field lines are perpendicular to the coil, the coil is rotated in the magnetic
field and the induced emf produced increases. This happens in this position because
of the number of intercepting magnetic field lines maximum.
