ACTIVITY 113L.

2: REVIEW OF CONCEPTS ON ELECTROMAGNETISM

1. What is an electromagnet?

An electromagnet is a magnet that runs on electricity. Unlike a permanent magnet, the

strength of an electromagnet can easily be changed by changing the amount of
electric current that flows through it. The poles of an electromagnet can even be
reversed by reversing the flow of electricity.

2. Why does an electromagnet have a stronger magnetic field than the solenoid it
contains?

The magnetic field of the solenoid magnetizes the ferromagnetic bar by aligning its
magnetic domains. The combined magnetic force of the magnetized iron bar and the
wire coil makes an electromagnet very strong. Electromagnets are the strongest
magnets it is more robust if there are more turns in the coil of wire or more current flows
through it.

3. Identify four factors that affect the strength of an electromagnet.

The four main factors that affect the strength of an electromagnet are: the loop count
of the wire, the strength of the current, the shape and size of the wire, and the nature
and presence of an iron core.
