How Mobile Reports Helps in Transport Planning
Technological and social forces have pushed smartphone applications (apps) from the fringe to the mainstream. Mobility
information extracted from mobile phone data (mpd) has shown substantial progress the last years. Smartphone applications
and multimodal aggregators, offer the potential for transportation planners and policymakers.

Understanding peoples’ travel activity patterns

Understanding the motivations and choices underlying them

Helps in origin-destination (od) survey, with the help of call data records (cdr)

Travel information from mobile phone data

Smart Phone App/ Mobility App
Apps are computer programs designed to operate on an array of
portable devices. mobility apps assist users in planning, Mobility
understanding, and enhancing a user’s transportation choices and App
modal selection. how users interact with apps include:

1. Wider use of data sources: Transportation apps are

increasingly drawing upon numerous data feeds, traffic sensors,
device GPS data, self-reported roadway incidents

3. Functional disaggregation: Apps are becoming less multi-
functional and are focusing on fewer key functions.

4. Bundled apps as services: New aggregator services are

Usage of Mobile Phone Data
several usages of OD-information obtained from mobile phone data are;-

 Improving the Quality of Transport Models

 Determining Origins and Destinations at Specific Location

 Out-of-Home advertising

Ongoing practice of mobile phone

data in generating Mobile reports

In the Netherlands these data are prepared by

Mezuro based on data from the Vodafone mobile
network.

Using these data (over 17 billion location-based

events monthly) regular and irregular traffic patterns
can be determined at local, regional and national
scales for any time period, including the average
working day, which is commonly used for transport
policy purposes.

Worldwide Example of use of Mobile reports
Road traffic information supplied by mobile technology:

The Singapore Land Transport Authority use drivers’ smart-phones as traffic sensors and to deliver personalised real-time
traffic information.

The Waze (Google) app generates traffic, mapping and other road data in back-ground mode, and reports on traffic
disruptions or fuel prices.

Social media, especially Twitter and crowd-sourcing, are important sources of transport information and control.

90% of US States use Twitter and Facebook to publicise traffic incidents, construction projects and safety initiatives; 50%
offer mobile apps and 73% have mobile-friendly web sites.
