‘Auf dem Weg zur technisehen Beherrschung eines Instrumentes
bbewahrt sich von jeher die Kombination von systematischen
Ubungen und musikalisch ansprechenden Spielsticken, die typi>
sche instrumental Schwierigkeiten enthalten. Unter den ver-
‘ffentlichten Studien derersten Gattung dirfte fir den Flotisten
das konsequent aufgebaute Enseignement complet dela fle”
von Marcel Moyse (Ledue) besondere Bedeutung haben. An
An~
nannten gemafiigten Moderne vertraut macht,

INTRODUCTION
The achievement of technical mastery of an instrument is
largely dependent on a combination of systematic exercises
and musically interesting compositions which contain specific
technical difficulties relating to the instrument in question,
Among the studies of the first category, Marcel Moyse's “En-
seignement comples de la lite” (Leduc), is of particular value
for the flautist. As regards literature of the second category,
however, although there is no lack of compositions written in
the style of the 19th century, the 20ch century is poorly
represented, Two exceptions arc Paul Jeanjean's “Etudes mo-
dernes” (Leduc). which deat chiefly with the stylistic charac
teristics of the impressionist composers, and Auréle Nicolet’s
collection of “Studien zum Spielen neuer Musik” (Gerig),
which includes compositions by contemporary and avantgarde
composers. Heiner Reitz's “Caprices” now fill a gap by
familiarizing flautists with forms of expression used by so-called
“moderately modern” composers in a stimulating and techn
cally instructive fashion.
For instructional purposes, here is alist of some of the main
points of flute technique with reference to the pieces most
suited to the practice of the various aspects
1. Single tonguing, non legato (comparable to the
of stringed instruments): For Nos. II, IV and X,
tonguing is recommended as a preliminary exercise, prefer
ably line by line or phrase by phrase in slow tempo.
2. Single ronguing, staccato: No. VII
3. Double tonguing (comparable to the springing strokes of
stringed instruments): No. X (see also annotation 1 and 8).
4. Triple tonguing: No. IM (see also annotation 1 and 8),
5. Mixed tonguing: The semirquaver runs in No. | are best
executed as follows:
6. Legato over large intervals: No. XL
7. Finger dexterity: Nos. IV and V (see also annotation 8).
8 Articulation: No. Mil is suitable for the practice of the
following types of articulation:
oid
In the same way, Nos. V and X may be used as preliminary
exercises with various types of articulation, e.g.
tase pore

No. Vi contains mixed areuaton
9. Tongued dotted rbythms: For the chythmically precise exe-
cution of No. IX, practice with the metronome is recom:
mended (rapid quavers).
10, Short grace-notes: The grace-notes in No. I should be
practised slowly as follows:
