Online Services: Lesson 1 Examples / Notes: Done
Communication websites
Instant messaging is a message that is sent directly to a
person. When the person receives the message their
phone will make a sound to let them know that they have
received a message, such as whatsapp.

Email is a letter but online rather on a piece of paper and


will appear in a person's inbox. Apps that you can email
on are outlook and gmail.

Newsgroups are app or websites that you can view news


on instead of buying a physical copy of a newspaper.
Websites that you can view news on are bbc and daily
mail.

Social networking is making connections with people/


talking to people. Apps that you can talk to people on
would be instagram, snapchat and facebook.

Online conferencing is talking to people on the computer


and you can see and hear them on your computer. Apps
that you can see and hear people would be Microsoft
teams, zoom and google classroom.

Blogs are when famous people video themselves in a day


in life doing everything they do normally and people
across the world can view their video and like it or
subside to their channel, Apps that you can Blog on
would be youtube and also facebook

Real time information Train timetables are information on time that trains are
coming so you know what time your trains are coming.

News services are when you can watch a full biefe of


what is happening in the world, such as terriouism and
sport. An example of new service would be Home - BBC

Traffic report is when your satnav can tell you if there is a


crash on the motorway you are on. An example of this
would be if you were listening to the radio and there was
an ancient, the volume of the radio would turn up so

Flight status update is when you can check the status of


your flight you will be getting on, so if there are cancelled
for a day you don't need to go to the airport that day. An

Weather is when the weather man or woman can tell you


what the weather is going to be like for that day, such as
rain, snow or sun. An example of weather is

Interment banking is when you can manage your money


and make payment to other people from an app. Student

Online auction website is when you can bid or sell


products for a certain amount of money you want to
release your item for. An example of the online auction

Retail sales is when

Government websites The service involves public services such as government


bodies,like the DVLA and local council.

Examples include online tax returns,e-voting,renewing


car tax, revenue collection and also applications for
services and grants.

Education The education is website such as BBC bitesize, hegarty


maths and GCSE pod, which are websites that can be
used to learn or catch up on work that can be accessed
from home or on the go.

Entertainment Entertainment is watching netflix or playing computer


games, such as fortinite, cool maths games etc. When
doing these things it passes a lot of time when u have a
lot of free time.

Download services The service involves files which can be downloaded and
saved onto the user’s computer. These are legal services.

Examples include downloads for music, films,software


and also upgrades

Compressions (.zip) An ZIP files is a location where one or more
files are able to be kept in one place, instead of
lots of different files

Online software for creation Online software for creation is an application for making
work and creating things. Application that can be used for
creation would be that google doc and google slides that
save on its own so, there is no need to keep saving work,
when and completing.

Version control Version control is when you have made a game for
example and you have finished the work and have shared
to a classroom or a group of people, so then they can see
but, you need to make some slight tweaks to make your
work better but you make a copy of the document so if
you make any mistakes and it does make you restart all
your work again.

Levels of access Level of access is when you have certain access to


information in the workplace to relate to your job, so you
don't have too much information that does suit your job
or position in the workplace.

Netiquette
Netiquette is the set of rules to which users should
conform when online. It is short for net etiquette. This
would include not using capitals appreciating privacy and
not making unkind comments

Online communities
Online communities are transferring data from one user
to another or many. Often this is done through specialist
software or websites, including social media and lots of
different platforms

Virtual world A virtual world is a computer simulated representative of


a world with specific spatial and physical characteristics.
Examples of a virtual world are online games such as
counterstrike. Counterstrike takes place in a virtual world
type environment.

Chat & chat rooms


Chat rooms means online chatting such as instant
messaging and online. You can chat to anyone using a
smartphone or if u dont have a smartphone you can use
ipads and pc. If your using an ipad and a pc most like you
u can contact someone by can download skype and use
to to chat with people around the world

Social networking
Social networking is the use of internet- based social
media sites to stay in contact with ur friends, family,
colleagues, customers or clients.Social Networking

use social networking is because it takes up your free
time. One other advantage you use social networking is
to find or entertaining content.

Instant messaging
Instant messaging is a message which is sent on a phone
and you receive it straight away ( you can see if they are
typing) for example whatsapp. Other apps use instant
messaging are snapchat,instagram and if you've got an
apple smartphone you can use instant messaging.

VOIP – video conferencing


Video conference means when you can talk to people
online and you can see their faces as well. Examples of
video conferencing are microsoft teams, zoom,skype and
if you are using a smartphone you can use whatsapp as

Cloud computing
Cloud computing is where data is saved on external
servers instead of the user's hard drive. The external
servers are called hosts and are owned by a hosting
company.cloud users can access software, data and
storage provided by their hosting company.
Ubiquitous computing
Ubiquitous computing means existing everywhere.
Ubiquitous computing is where processors are embedded
into everyday objects.
An embedded computer system. It is a combination of a
computer processor, computer memory, and input/output
peripheral devices that has a dedicated function within a
larger mechanical or electronic system.

POP (Point of presence) A point of presence is an artificial demarcation


point or network interface point between
communicating entities

NAP (Network Access Point) An access point is a device that creates a wireless
local area network, or WLAN, usually in an office or
large building.

Client Server Architecture client-server architecture of a computer network


in which many clients request and receive
service from a centralized server (host
computer).

Routers A router is a device that provides Wi-Fi and is


typically connected to a modem. It sends
information from the internet to personal
devices like computers, phones, and tablets.

Network backbone A backbone or core network is a part of a


computer network which interconnects
networks, providing a path for the exchange of
information between different LANs or
subnetworks.

Internet connection types Internet connections come in five basic types:


dial-up, DSL, cable, fiber, and satellite. Fiber
internet is the fastest widely available internet
technology.Cable internet uses the same types
of cables that transmit cable TV services. It has
broadband capability and thus can reach high
speeds

Components of the URL The components of URL are:

Search engines An example of a search engine is google bing,

Sending an email – how it An email is a system for sending and receiving

Advantages of email Sending an email is easy as long as you have a

People don't have to be present when sending

flat or house

Differences between POP & The different between POP and IMAP is that
IMAP POP is a simple way to access email from a
email server but IMAP allows you to access
your email from any client, on any device and
also sign in to webmail at any time
