Siphon Spillway DISCHARGE EQUATION FOR SIPHON SPILLWAY = 3 Energy Dissipators + Different types of energy dissipators may be used along with a spillway, alone or in combination of more than one, depending upon the energy to be dissipated and erosion control required downstream of a dam. + Broadly, the energy dissipators are classified under two categories - tilling basins or Bucket Type Energy Dissipators Stilling basin type energy dissipators + HORIZONTAL APRON TYPE ra Sloping Apron Type Bucket type energy dissipators a SELECTION OF AN ENERGY DISSIPATOR An energy dissipator is selected based on the following 2 parameters 1. JUMP HEIGHT - fixed for a particular ischarge intensity and height of the spillway 2.TAIL WATER DEPTH - calculated by actual discharge observations * @ Now a graph is plotted between 41. Jump Height vs Discharge 2. Tail Water Depth vs Discharge ‘The above graphs are superimposed and the following cases arise CASEI «This is the ideal case + In this, the horizontal apron provided on the riverbed downstream fram the toe of the spillway would sufice +The length ofthe apron should be equal tothe length of the jump corresponding to the ‘maximum discharge over the spillway. 6 case ll + iis apparent that the tall water depth as provided by the natural vers not sufficiently for the jump to form. + This may be overcome by proving + astiling basin apron that is depressed below the average riverbed level + asillor baffle of sufficient height a: the end ofthe spilway, or + Askl jump, ie. Trajectory roller bucket. CASE 50 + Since ths situation results in submergence of the jump, + Therefore, itis necessary to raise the flocr in order to form a clear jump. + In practice, itis done by providing AN INCLINED APRON OF THE STILLING BASIN oF ‘ROLLER BUCKET = 2 CASEIV * This situation may be taken care of by providing an inclined floor inthe upper portion ofthe stilling basin and + providing either a depressed floor inthe lower portion ofthe basin or provide a baffle at the fend ofthe basin 5 + In this case a sloping apron may be provided ‘which les partly above and partly below the Fiverbed + So thatthe jump will form on te higher stope atlow discharges and on the lower slope at high discharges 38
