EXPERIMENT-7

Aim – To prepare M/40 solution of Mohr’s salt and using this solution find out molarity and
strength of the given potassium permanganate (KMnO4) solution.
Apparatus Required – Watch glass, weight box, volumetric flask, conical flask, burette,
pipette, clamp stand, electronic balance, beakers.
Chemicals Required – distilled water, dilute sulphuric acid, potassium permanganate solution,
Mohr’s salt.

Theory – KMnO4 oxidises Fe2+ to Fe3+ in acidic medium which is cold and itself gets reduced
to colourless Mn2+ ions.
Ionic Reaction –
MnO4- + 8H++ 5Fe2+ Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O
Molecular mass of Mohr’s salt (FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O) = 392 u
Amount of Mohr’s salt required for preparing 250 ml of M/40 = 392 x 250/1000 x 1/40
=2.45g
Oxidising agent - KMnO4 in acidic medium
Reducing agent – Mohr’s salt
Indicator - KMnO4 act as self indicator
End point – Colourless to light pink

Observation Table: (on blank page)

Weight of the watch glass = 28.50 g

Weight of Mohr’s salt= 2.45 g

Weight of the watch glass + Weight of Mohr’s salt= 30.95 g
Volume of Mohr’s salt solution taken = 10ml.

Calculation:- (on blank page)
(A) Molarity of the KMnO4 solution
= M KMnO4 x V KMnO4 / M Mohr’s salt x V Mohr’s salt = 2/10
= M KMnO4 x 5 / 1/40 x 10 = 2/10

M KMnO4 =0.01 M
(B) Strength of given KMnO4 solution = Molarity X molar mass
= 0.01 X 158 =1.58 g/L
Result – (on ruled page)
Molarity of given KMnO4 solution = 0.01 M
Strength of given KMnO4 solution =1.58 g/L

Precautions – (on ruled page)

1. Always rinse the burette and pipette before use.
2. Always read upper meniscus in the burette as KMnO4 is dark in colour.
