Activity: Transformer

Differentiate Step-up and Step-down transformer. Give Examples on the application of a

step-up and step-down transformer.

In a step-up transformer, the primary winding is made up of thick insulated copper wire,
and the secondary is made up of thin insulated copper wire, whereas, in step-down
transformer the output current is high so, the thick insulated copper wire is used for making
secondary winding.
Applications of a step down transformer
Step down transformer decrease the voltage to a safe value at the end of the transmission line
where the consumer of electric power is located. A transformer can be used to step down the
voltage from 240 v to 9 v for ringing the bell or operating a transistor radio.
