Transmission Line Structures. By S. S. Murthy and A. R. Santhakumar.

McGraw-Hill, New York, 1990. 343 pp. Price: $19.95. (ISBN 0-07-099156-
1)

This book presents a comprehensive treatment of the design of steel

transmission line structures. It provides a wealth of information on all
aspects of the topic, mainly in relation to Indian design standards, but
comparisons with the practice of other countries are also given.
Chapters 2 and 3 cover the basic criteria governing design. In chapter 2
the selection of materials used, the choice of configuration and the various
constraints imposed by electrical transmission systems are discussed.
Configuration choice is examined in relation to economic and environ-
mental aspects as well as those of structural reliability. Chapter 3 deals
with all aspects of loading including broken wire conditions, load
combinations prescribed by various codes of practice and factors of safety
assumed in design. Chapter 4 deals with sag-tension calculations. Chapter
5 describes the analysis process. Chapter 6 deals with actual design aspects
relating to tower members, connections and accessories. In addition to
detail design a section on computer-based optimisation techniques is
included. Chapter 7 outlines the testing of towers and chapter 8 discusses
corrosion protection. Chapter 9 describes the analysis and design of
foundations and includes examples from various parts of the world.
Chapter 10 deals with tower fabrication and line construction, and chapter
11 deals with the scope for research and development, and includes a
useful section on projected designs for ultra-high voltage systems.
The book contains both theoretical background and practical examples
making it a useful volume for both students and practising engineers and
provides a clear picture of the factors to be considered when approaching
the problems of design and appraisal of transmission line structures.
