Practical-1

Working with Computer Systems and Peripherals

Objective:

1. Identify various parts of CPU

2. Explain functions of CPU ,ALU and memory unit of a computer system

3. Identify input, output and peripherals devices

Resources Required:

1. Computer System (CPU)

2. Peripherals (keyboard, mouse, printer, Monitor etc.)

3. Screw driver set.

Theory:

What is Computer?

Computer is a device which can accept, store and process the Data as per user

Requirement

Components of Computer System

1) CPU: It is Central Processing Unit which called Brain of the Computer System
which

processes the data and gives results. The main parts of CPU are Motherboard
which

contains processor chips and Memory Units and other slots to connect different
types

of input/output devices and peripherals.

CPU has two main blocks:

 Control Unit (CU): A process of input, output, processing and storage is

performed under the supervision of a unit called 'Control Unit'. It decides

when to start receiving data, when to stop it, where to store data, etc. It takes

care of step-by-step processing of all operations inside the computer

 Arithmetic and Logical Unit ( ALU ) : The major operations performed by

the ALU are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, logic and

comparison

2) Input Devices : Devices which are use to enter the input data into the CPU for

processing i.e. Mouse, Keyboard

3) Output Devices : Devices which are use to display, print or store the result
which is

processed by CPU i.e. Monitors, Printers

4) Storage Devices (Memory): The devices which store the Data are known as
Memory

devices. There are two types of Memory units in Computer System

 RAM : Random Access Memory which is used to store the data/Results

temporary during the processing

 ROM : Read only Memory which stores the data permanently i.e. Hard disk

5) Power Supply ( SMPS ) : A Switched Mode Power supply used for computer
system

to supply regulated power to various parts of CPU as per their requirements

Procedure:

1. Disconnect the given computer System

2. Disassemble the CPU Unit

3. Observe interconnection between various parts and Slots of CPU

4. Disassemble Memory Unit ( RAM, Hard Disk),SMPS, Processor Chips and Fan

5. Assemble all parts and connection in original form

Precaution

 Handle Computer System with care
