The most important things are Commitment, Trust, and Love. 1. Offense mixes best with Simplicity and Consistency. a. KISS. b. Muscle Memory 2. Practice a. Volume Shooting i. We shoot 45 minutes everyday 1. Game shots...from game spots ONLY 2. Every shooting drill needs to be competitive, scored, timed, and FUN! ii. Some Fun Up-Tempo Shooting Drills: 1. Olympic Shooting 2. 5+1 3 Point Shooting 3. Full Court Attack 4, Plus or Minus 50...4 Minute Shooting 5. Volume 3s ~ Who's going to be in the 50 Point Club? b. Confidence Building (Swagger) - We all have to be “Corner Men and Women" c. Must be Up-Tempo if you want to play Up-Tempo in the games! i. Tolk fast, Move fast, etc... ii, Each drill has to be at the pace that you want to play d. Hold Your Whistle! i. You can't be blowing your whistle correcting things all the time...no one likes that © ii, Trust your assistant coaches to coach and correct on the baseline....that's how to fix things - 1 on 1 interactions— 1 on 1 attention e. Up-Tempo Practice Drills: i, 10 Second Drill ii, 11 Player Fast Break Buckeye Basketball iv. Shell Drill and Rebounding Drills must also be Half Court/Full Court to always work on transition! Game Management a. Everything you do has to be part of your Up-Tempo Offensive Strategy: i. Your defensive philosophy must be in line with your Up-Tempo Offensive Philosophy 1. Speed the game up on the defensive end of the floor 2. Full Court Press, Aggressive Defensive Pressure in the Half Court, Traps, etc. 3. The more turnovers you force the more Up-Tempo offense you get to play ii, The Clocks Your Friend...and you never want it to stop! 1. Limit your timeout usage (trust your players) ii, Stick to Your Guns! 1. You have to TRUST the fact that you are conditioned and used to playing at this pace...and your opponent isnot. 2. This means sticking with it early even though it might not be working...your kids need to know that the staff believes in what WE do and that WE just need to do what WE do better. iv. Inbounding the Ball Quick must be a EXTREME priority 1. Up-Tempo...means ALWAYS Up-Tempo...make or miss...on a made basket, inbound it quick and let's go score! v. You Can't Run Plays...Let Your Players Make Plays! They'll love you for it. Follow this guide and | believe that your marriage to an Up-Tempo Offensive system will be long lasting. Ferrara@cmich.edu Olympic Shooting Thisis a fast break shooting dill. Your players will work on passing, catching, sprinting the floor, filing the lanes, and finishing in transition. ‘At the far end line, have 2 players with a ball ready to pass. At the starting end line, have 3 lines. Person in the middle line has a ball. The middle Person outlets to one of the lane runners and follows the pass. The other lane runner sprints ahead and catches a second outlet pass and shoots a lay-up. The other two runners receive passes from the baseline passers. The person who shot the initial lay- up. rebounds her own lay-up and starts the break with the two baseline passers. Repeat this order for the duration of the dil The coaches will call out what type of shots to shoot (LE. Ferrara@cmich.ed: 5+ 1: 3pt Shooting This is a Competitive 3 point shooting drill. Your players will work on catching and shooting the 3pt shot under pressure. This is a great way fo see who can shoot in crunch time. You must split your team into 2 teams. | team at each basket. Teams will each have 2 balls cand shoot 3s from 5 spots. © Ifyou are a non-3 Point Shooter you must take a power lay-up or pull-up jumper. To advance to the next spot, your tear must make 6 3s from your spot...with the last 2mokes being consecutive. ‘© Ifyou get fo 5 makes and miss the Plus | shot...your team drops back down to four and they must hit two consecutive shots to advance. The 14 team to make it through all 5 spots wins the drill and bragging rights. Your players will use a variety of necessary Up-Tempo Offensive skils (ball handling, passing, decision making, perimeter shooting, finishing inside, and offensive rebounding) On one baseline you will have a line of perimeter players. At the other end of the court you will have your post player positioned on the opposite block and a guard in the ball-side comer (later you can move this guard to the opposite corner). Defense is positioned on the post player, on the comer, and waiting at haif court. ©. The defensive player waiting at half court can’t move until the ball handler attacks them. You need a coach with a ball rack positioned near the perimeter player line. © The 1*!person on the perimeter line sprint and catches the coaches pass in stride and attacks at full speed. "The bail handler then attacks the rim and reads the defense. ‘+ They can score, dump to the post, or kick to the comer depending on what's open, All three players crash the o-boards and attempt fo score. After the three players finish...the ball handler goes to the corner, the corner goes to back of the perimeter player line, and the posts rotate in. Ferrara@cmich.edu 10 Second This is a fast break dil, Your players will work on passing, catching, sprinting the floor, filing the lanes, finishing in transition, inbounding the ball quickly, and conditioning. © 10Seconds on the clock...team of 3 has fo make 2 full court lay-ups in 10 seconds. © 3 Players are positioned in the paint (1 Post, 1 Wing. | Point Guard) ©The post player throws the ball off the backboard (clock starts) and outlets the ball to the PG....the wing is running the opposite lane. © After the PG catches the outlet she passes to the wing in transition for a lay-up. © All3 players are sprinting to get in the paint ©The post player sprints to get the ball out of the net and quickly inbound the ball to the PG. © The PG then passes ahead fo the wing that sprinted ahead for another lay- vp. © _Allthree players must be in the paint by the time the clock runs out. zl Lemp Building an Up-Tempo Offense 2010 Final Four, Assistant Coaches Roundtable Session 1, April 6!", 2010 Bill Ferrara, Central Michigan University ~ email: Bill. Ferrara@cmich.edu 11 Player Fast Break This is an Up-Tempo ail that works on Transition Offense and Defense in 3 on 2 situations. Start with 3 players at half court and 2 players on defense. Run your offense ina 3 on 2 situation trying to get quick scores. You want either a lay-up or an open 3, © There is oniy one shot allowed on the basket. Whoever gets the rebound or the ball out of the net starts a new 3 on 2 break by outletting quick. © There are players positioned on the sidelines as shown in the picture below waiting to be receive the outlet pass and start a new 3 on 2 situation. © The diflis scored as so: © 1 Point for an assist, rebound, block, and steal 2 Points for a made 2pt basket. 3 Points for a made 3pt basket. 4 Points for a charge. -1 Point for a tumover. ‘©The person with the highest score doesn't run. Buckeye Basketball This is an Up-Tempo dill that works on Transition Offense and Defense in 2.0n 1,3 0n 2, 40n3, 5.on4, and 5 on 5 situations. © Spit your team into two even teams. © Each team is positioned under a basket and coached by an assistant. © Player A from Team 1 starts by shooting a Free Throw at Team 2's basket (2 team two players rebound) Team 2 either rebounds the miss or quickly takes out the make and starts a 2.on 1 After Team 2 scores or Team | secures the rebound...Team 1 sends two players in with Team 1's Player A...and starts the 3 on 2.going the other way. © After Team 1 scores or Team 2 secures the rebound...Team 2 sends two players in with their fwo players...and starts a 4 on 3 going the other way. © After Team 2 scores or Team I secures the rebound...Team 1 sends two players in with their three players...and starts a 5 on 4 going the other way. © After Team 1 scores or Team 2 secures the rebound...Team 2 sends their final player in,..and starts a 5 on 5 going the other way. © You can play 5 on 5 for as long as you lke. © We normally play best of 3...3 minutes sessions. © We score this dill with as ifit was a real game. aan Le 222, =
