Microprocessors…
 Microprocessors are computers usually on a
single chip embedded in devices.
 They usually check, regulate and control
something.
 Many household devices are fitted with
microprocessors to control their functions.
Example:
◦ Automatic washing machines
◦ Microwave ovens
◦ Cookers
◦ Automatic dish washers
◦ Robotic vacuum cleaners
◦ Smart fridges

Positive effects of microprocessors


on lifestyle of people (Advantages).

 People no longer have to do manual tasks at


home.
 There is no longer a need to stay home while
food is being cooked or clothes are being
washed.
 They give people more time for leisure activities,
hobbies, shopping and socializing.
 It is possible to control ovens and central heating
systems using smart phones.
 Smart fridges and freezers can automatically
order fresh food using their internet connection,
thus prevent food waste.
 Automated burglar alarm systems give people a
sense of security and well-being.

Negative effects of microprocessors

on lifestyle of people (Disadvantages).
 Labour-saving devices can lead to
unhealthy life style.
 They tend to make people rather lazy
since there is a dependence on the
devices.
 People can become less fit if they just lie
around at home while the device carry
out many of the previous manual tasks.
 Potential to lose these household skills
(de-skilling).
