Introduction
About this ebook
The purpose with this ebook is to let you explore more of the Open G Tuning landscapes by
presenting over 100 chords with diagrams. The content is divided into eight parts:

1. Most essential chords

2. Open position chords

3. Voicings

4. Blues chords

5. One-finger slide chords

6. Movable chords

7. Chord progressions

8. Tabs

The ebook is sparse in sense of colors and has a simple layout, which is made with the print
possibility in mind.

Tune in into Open G Tuning

You are probably familiar with how the guitar should be tuned to play in the Open G Tuning.
But if you are unfamiliar to it, or if you need to refresh your memory, the guitar should be
tuned as D-G-D-G-B-D from lowest (thickest) to highest (thinnest) string.

To include an octave perspective, the tuning could be written as D2-G2-D3-G3-B3-D4,

meaning that the lowest string is a D note on the second octave, the second lowest string is a
G note on the second octave and so on.

Always tune down (decreasing string tension) and not up (increasing string tension). This is
important because too much pressure will break the strings, and in the worst scenario,
damage the guitar.

Open A Tuning
Related to the Open G Tuning is the Open A Tuning (E-A-E-A-C#-E). You can put a capo on
the second fret and play all the presented chords two positions up in the Open A Tuning.

Many names of the same chords

Sometimes the same chord shape can be referred to more than one name. This can be
confusing, but it is simply because different chords sometimes include the same notes.

In the Open G Tuning, here are two examples:

1. The chord XX0204 can be referred to both D6 and Bm7/D.

2. The chord 055558 can be referred to both C7/D and C9/D.

Open G fretboard
Fretboard diagram including frets 1-12 and open strings for Open G tuning (sharps are used
instead of flats; C# = Db etc.).

Differences between Open G and Open D tunings

Among the open tunings, Open G and Open D are two of the most popular.

There are many similarities between them, which is understandable considering the tunings
(D-G-D-G-B-D and D-A-D-F#-A-D). So, if you are familiar with the Open D Tuning, you will
probably recognize some patterns when turning to the Open G. Read more about Open D
Tuning.

What can be noted is that the lowest string in the Open G Tuning also is tuned as D. It is
simple to many steps from the standard E note to the G note. In the Baritone Tuning, the
lowest note is B and to keep going two additional whole tone steps would make the string way
to lose.

Another thing to notice is that the Open G is closer related to the standard tuning (three
changes) compared to the Open D (four changes).
