CHAPTER 3

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO TODAY ???


Do you have a plan on Sunday ? what is it ? A plan is a set of decision about how to do
something in the future. In other words, a plan is a set of actions that have been thought of as a way to
do or achieve something, or something that a person intends to do. In this chapter, we are going to
discuss about asking for and giving information about intention to do something

Jadi, di bagian ini kita akan belajar tentang ungkapan menanyakan dan menyatakan niat
untuk melakukan sesuatu ( Expressing of Intention ) serta membedakan penggunaan be going to dan
would like to

A. EXPRESSING INTENTION
Expression of Intention merupakan suatu istilah ekspresi atau ungkapan yang sering digunakan
dalam bahasa Inggris untuk menyatakan suatu niat, rencana atau sesuatu yang ingin dicapai atau
diraih. Nah, apa sajakah ekspresi itu? yuk, simak bersama…

The following are main expression of stating intention ( kita bisa menggunakan expressi
untuk mengungkapkan dan menyatakan niat dengan kalimat seperti dibawah ini !)
1. I will….
2. I’m going to….
3. I would like to…..
4. I would rather…..than

Example :
1. I will improve my English.
2. I’m going to a bookstore.
3. I would like to swim in the new swimming pool

The following are the function of phrases used to give information about the intention of
doing something.
No Phrases Function
1. I will ( verb ) - at the moment we make a new decision or plan. The
thought has just come into our head
- instant decision
- plans decided at the moment of speaking
2. I’m going to ( verb ) - when we have made the decision
- when we want to talk about a paln for the future
- this plan does not have to be near future
- to talk about plans decided before the moment of
speaking
- activity or plan already in thought or motion or
intention related to present time
- this is about to happen
- an activity that the person is about to do
3 I would like to/ I’d like to - talk about dreams and polite
3 ( verb ) - it lets someone know what you would be/ interest in
doing something. This can be a physical, mental or verbal
action
- to talk about what people want to do or are willing to
do
4. I would rather ( verb) - when we choose between two options. Example: I
than…. would rather stay at home than go fishing

ACTIVITY 1: READING COMPREHENSION

Read the following conversation ! then answer the questions !


Sari           : Hello Ardi, what are you going to do this weekend?
Ardi           : Hello, I am going to visit my grandmother in Jakarta. How about you?
Sari           : Well, I still do not have any plan for the weekend.
Ardi           : Why don’t you go to museum?
Sari           : That is a good idea. But, I have to do my assignment first. Have you done your
assignment?
Ardi           : No, I have not, I’d like to do them this evening.
Sari           : Well, can we do together?
Ardi           : Yes, of course.
Sari           : Okay, great. I will go to your house at 4 P.M then.
Ardi           : I will be waiting for.

TASK 1

B. THE USE OF “ BE GOING TO” AND “ WOULD LIKE TO “


1. Be going to
Be going to memiliki kesamaan dengan Will/shall pada Simple Future, bedanya adalah, Be
going to aktifitas yang akan di lakukan pada waktu akan datang yang sudah
direncanakan/diprogram.
Pola Umum/Pattern:
S + be (is, am, are) + going to + V1
He, she, it : is
I : am
You, they we : are
Contoh:
a. (+) Saras is going to visit Mount Bromo next week.
    (-) Saras is not going to visit Mount Bromo next week.
    (?) Is Saras going to visit Mount Bromo next week? Yes, She is/ No, She is not.

b. (+) Tom and Tim are going to go fishing tomorrow.


    (-) Tom and Tim are not going to go fishing tomorrow.
    (?) Are Tom and Tim going to go fishing tomorrow? Yes, they are./No, They are not.
2. Would like to
Would like to artinya ingin, mau bisa berari akan dan memiliki makna yang hampir sama
dengan be going to.
Pola Umum/Pattern:
S + Would like to + V1
Contoh:
a. (+) Father would like to stay in Jakarta next month.
    (-) Father would not like to stay in Jakarta next month.
    (?) Would Father like to stay in Jakarta next month? Yes, he would./ No, he
would              not.
b. (+) We would like to get married on April 25.
    (-) We would not like to get married on April 25.
    (?)  Would we like to get married on April 25? Yes, We would./No, We would not.

Expressing intention, future plan


 Kalimat yang diberi tanda cetak tebal (bold) adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk
menyatakan keinginan yang akan dilakukan. Contoh diatas adalah penerapan dari Expressing
intention dalam dialog dan komunikasi praktis. Contoh di atas menggunakan kalimat
affirmatif /positif, dan pertanyaan (yes-no question dan information question dengan question
word). Tidak terdapat contoh kalimat negatif.
TASK 2
Answer the following question with “ be going to “ and would you like” !

1. What are you going to do in the canteen ?


2. What would you like to do if you get a lot of money ?
3. What are you going to do at home later ?
4. What would you like to do if you can speak English fluently ?
5. What would you like to do after graduating ?

TASK 3
Write your plans by using “ be going to” and “would like to” ! your parafgraph must answer the
following questions ! do it on a piece of paper !

1. What is your future plan ?


2. What would you like to do for it ?
3. What are you going to do to improve ?
4. How are you going to do it ?
