I got my suitcase and jumped into a taxi.

I watched with interest as we drove into

Shanghai. The tall buildings felt familiar, like New York, but when I saw the signs, I
knew I was somewhere different. Eventually, I arrived at my destination. I pulled my
suitcase up the stairs and walked through the front door of the restaurant. An
important-looking man with silver hair came over to me. ‘Good evening, Mr Harris,’
he said warmly. ‘I’m Mr Chen. We’ve been expecting you.’ ‘Nice to meet you,’ I
replied.

Cogí mi maleta y me subí a un taxi. Observé con

Mr Chen took me to a table where he introduced me to four other men. They were
friendly and spoke my language so I was happy we could communicate. Someone
said, ‘Are you hungry? Please eat.’ and suddenly there was a steaming plate of
chicken in front of me. Actually, I wasn’t hungry at all but I wanted to be polite so I
picked up the chopsticks and put the meat in my mouth. It was good and I enjoyed
every bite. I put my chopsticks next to my empty plate. I needed time to think.

Everyone at the table looked pleased and I knew I was making a good impression.
Suddenly, another plate was put in front of me. I really didn’t want it but how could I
say no? I ate it all, piece by piece, until my plate was empty. But the same thing
happened again. Another plate arrived, this time with seafood. I politely left the
table and went to the restroom. By now I felt, and looked, very full. I knew I couldn’t
eat the food. But would my hosts be annoyed with me?

Just then an Australian man entered the room to

wash his hands. ‘Are you OK?’ he asked, ‘You
don’t look so well.’ I explained that every time I
politely ate everything on my plate, another plate
appeared. As he listened, he started to smile. ‘So,
you ate all of your food because you think it’s
rude to leave food on your plate?’ he asked. I
nodded in reply. ‘Well, you’re right. It’s rude in
our countries. Here it can mean you want more
food.’ He left the room, leaving me to realize
what a silly mistake I’d made.
