WEEK 4-QUARTER 3
Name of Student : Section:
I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:
Since our country is a home to more than a hundred volcanoes, energy has been tapped from them.
Actually, the Philippines ranks second in the world’s production of geothermal energy. In this activity, you
will learn more about geothermal energy and how a geothermal power plant works.
Illustrate how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for human use.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
1. Compare the data on the number of complete spins of a pinwheel using the geothermal power
plant model.
III. ACTIVITIES:
A. Activity

See Figure 1. The figure shows geothermal power plant model. The foil-covered pot models the Earth’s
heat reservoir. The aluminum foil is the crust covering the heat that is within the Earth. The aluminum foil
has a hole at the center. The pot is filled with 2 quarts (or just half full) of tap water, that is being heated by
a heat source or stove. A can with one lid removed and has two holes at the opposite edges of the lid that
is still attached is placed on the top of the aluminum foil. A pinwheel is held above the can over both holes.
The pinwheel will start spinning once steam escapes out of the can. The table below shows the number of
complete spins of the pinwheel within 6 seconds. Compute for the average number of complete spins. Write
your answer on the space provided on the table.

The experimenter removed the can and counted the number of complete spins of the pinwheel when it was
held over the hole on the foil. See Figure 2 on the previous page. The table below shows the result.
Compute for the average number of complete spins. Write your answer on the space provided on the table.
