LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN SCIENCE-9

WEEK 6-QUARTER 3
Name of Student : Section:

Science Teacher: Date:

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:

Everybody experiences and is affected by the phenomenon, global warming. Global warming is a
potential increase in Average Global atmospheric temperature resulting from an enhanced Greenhouse
Effect. We often hear news headlines about the heat index in some provinces in the country reaching as
high as 50°C, that’s why PAGASA tells us not to stay for long hours outside and to drink lots of water.
II. LEARNING SKILLS FROM THE MELCs:

1. Differentiate greenhouse effect and "enhanced" greenhouse effect or global warming,

2. Describe the climatic phenomenon global warming and identify what cause it/its possible sources
3. Interpret the relationship of carbon dioxide emissions to global warming and the result of one's personal
carbon emission .

III. ACTIVITIES:

A. ACTIVITY

1. Do you know greenhouse effect and global warming? Are these phenomena just similar? Is greenhouse
effect advantageous to life on earth? To help you understand more about these, study Figure 1 and fill up
the blanks in the given paragraph. Choose from the terms in the box.

amount of sunlight is absorbed by the Earth's surface and warms it. This portion of sunlig
ht is converted into energy of longer wavelength (that is infrared or heat). The Earth's surface that is heated
infrared radiation. In the troposphere, greenhouse gases that are naturally present do not
absorb sunlight but absorbs , thereby preventing heat from escaping to outer space. This
phenomenon is referred to as Greenhouse Effect. This is important, since it maintains the needed
temperature to support life on earth. With the amount of greenhouse gases, this is what gives
E arth the right temperature for people to live. Due to human activities such as the use of fossil fuel burning
of forestland, etc. the concentration of greenhouse gases (which include Carbon dioxide, methane, CFC's
and nitrous oxide) in the atmosphere has steadily increased resulting in an "enhanced greenhouse effect"
which

is referred to as global warming. This global phenomenon, which in turn triggers climate change according t
o scientists will make "extreme weather"---referring to heatwaves, droughts and floods.

2. Study the Top Five Causes of Global Warming found in Column A and the Possible Sources of Global W
arming listed in Column B. Choose the letter of the correct source/s that corresponds to the given cause.

COLUMN A COLUMN B
1. Carbon dioxide emissions from burning gasoline a. croplands or agricultural land
2. Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil-fuel b. creation of more landfills,
3. Methane emissions c. motorized vehicles
4. Increase in the use of chemical fertilizers d. coal-fired thermal power plant
5. Deforestation e. illegal logging

3. Among the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide absorbs more of the infrared radiation or heat. Take note
that the amount of carbon dioxide started to increase during the Industrial Revolution. In 1988, the IPCC,
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has been established to cut down global greenhouse gas
emissions. Another international agreement adopted in 1997 and ratified in 2005, the Kyoto Protocol
encourages highly industrialized countries to limit and stabilize their greenhouse gas emissions. The IPCC
estimated that Earth could warm from a minimum of 1.8°C to as much as 4°C rise in global average
temperature by 2100. In the Philippines, it is projected to increase by 0.9°C by 2020 and 1.7°C by 2050. In
three sentences, interpret this

B. Analysis: Answer the questions below.

1. What happens to the atmospheric temperature as the amount of carbon dioxide
emissions increases?
2.What do you think are the harmful effects of global warming? Have you experienced these harmful
effects in your locality? How do these events affect you?

2
3. How do these events affect you?

C. Abstraction: Answer the following questions.

1. What is the difference between global warming and greenhouse effect?

2. How does carbon dioxide emissions affect global warming?

D. APPLICATION:
Carbon footprint refers to the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of
activities of an individual or organization. Each of us contributes to global warming with our emissions of car
bon dioxide. Are you willing to reduce your carbon footprint? Choose one response for each activity in the t
able. Get your total score and answer the given questions.
