Course Information
Catalog Description:

This course covers the basics of design philosophy, methodology, principles, and theory as a
foundation for surveying current research areas in the product development process. A brief
introduction to concurrent design and life cycle design is followed by addressing the application
of the design process to problem solving. The relationship between creativity and the design
process is explored by using tools for solving engineering system design and synthesis problems.
Computer, mathematical, and/or physical modeling of the problem and solution, the axiomatic
design approach, Taguchi robust design, design of experiments, and prototyping are strongly
emphasized topics.

Credits: 3 Contact Hours: 3

Textbook(s): David G. Ullman, “ The Mechanical Design Process”, 4th Edition, McGraw
Hill

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO):

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

CLO 1: Design a functionable product that fulfills the customers requirements

CLO 2: Work in teams professionally and effectively
CLO 3: Communicate effectively, both oral and written
CLO 4: Evaluate the most suitable alternative solution to solve a problem based on
functionality, cost, impact to environment, societal considerations, standards, etc.

Method of Instruction

Lectures: A combination of multimedia, white board and active learning (group discussions and
presentations). Case studies will also be used as an instructional tool

Project Description:
Your team should solve an engineering problem in Qatar that requires some sort of product
development. A prototype will be required to demonstrate the functional performance of the
product.
