Strain & Deformation Matrix

1. The following four points in the undeformed state have been affected by (a) simple shear
with γ=2, and (b) pure shear with kx=2. There has been no area/volume change. Use
appropriate deformation matrices to arrive at the deformed states. Please also show the
locations of the finite deformation states. (8)

2. Let Di be a matrix that represents the small amount of deformation in an individual

deformation increment. Plot the successive positions of the four corners of the square by
calculating the successive total deformation matrices: D1 = Di , D2 = Di D1 , D3 = Di D2, and
D4 = Di D3, where

i) Di11 = 1.19; Di22 = 0.84; Di12 = Di21 = 0;

ii) Di11 = Di22 = 1; Di12 = 0.4; Di21 = 0

Which one of the deformation matrices is a coaxial deformation ? Why? (8+1+1)

3. Write, using 2X2 deformation matrices, the following sequence of deformation:
compaction(vertical contraction) followed by simple shear followed by pure shear. Also
calculate the finite deformation matrix. Please note the plane of deformation and sequence of
deformation. (6)

4. Is it possible to define a different flow path for the following simple shear deformation? If
yes, how will you distinguish between the two progressive deformation stages? (6)
5. In the following two cases, a circle and an ellipse are undergoing dextral simple shear.
Please impose one incremental strain to arrive at the finite strain states for both the cases.
Compare and contrast the progressive strain stages in terms of the geometry of the blue
marker. Try to plot the hypothetical strain values corresponding to these three stages on the
Flinn Plot.

How does the initial geometry of the marker affect the finite strain state? How will you
distinguish the two progressive deformation states from the finite strain states? (6)
