Medium: Short Film

For my final major project, I have been given the choice to create a short film, music
video or an animation. The medium I have chosen to do is a short film. My target
audience for this final major project is going to be people between the ages 16-20. The
reason why I have picked this audience is because it is much easier to gather primary
research as I have a lot more people I can talk too and get their opinions from on my
production. From my previous unit (units 9&10) I have looked over my feedback from
my peers and my teachers in order to improve. One of them being that I need to
develop my characters to make my audience feel attached to them or understand them.
In addition to my feedback, I also need to create an in-depth narrative and have
locations, costumes and props to assist the narrative so that I don’t have to rely on the
script for my audience to understand. To improve my feedback, I am going to spend a
long efficient time to scout locations that can really tell the story of my character and
the narrative. Another thing that I need to do in order to create a good quality
production is to do research on my genre and really grasp the codes and conventions of
characters and what props to use. In addition, another thing I would like to do which
wasn’t included in my feedback, was to include suspenseful music and create a good
soundtrack for my production to help enhance the narrative.

The reason why I am creating this psychological short film is because I would like to
show my new skills I have learned from my previous unit which is where I also produced
a psychological film. The reason why I am doing a psychological is because I feel I didn’t
produce a good quality production in my last short film and would like to show
improvements. On the other hand, I would like to incorporate my knowledge on
psychological productions into my own by using the correct codes and conventions
(characters that suit the genre, costumes, lighting, props and locations).

To make sure I have a strong narrative that will suit the genre I am doing, I will be
sending out surveys and hosting focus groups so I can solidify my idea and constantly
receive as much feedback as possible. I have done an extensive amount of research in
my own time of my target audiences’ habits and how much they use social media as
whole. The reason why I have done this as it is important for me to discipline my idea
and shape it so it specifically fits my audience so they remain interested when I publish
my videos. Also, to make sure I post it on the correct social media platforms. Doing
research has also taught me how significantly target audience is important in
productions as it defines your production.
