am Dhita Wahyu Agustin nim 1802109063 (one, eight, zero, two, one, zero, nine, zero, six,
three) will present my proposal seminar entitled “The Effect Of Teaching Writing Through
Fantasy Movie For Junior High School Student”

-CHAPTER 1, BACKGROUND

Writing is the most complicated skill that must be mastered by students because students must be
able to express ideas, feelings, opinions in good written form.
By writing, a person can communicate, express ideas both internally and externally, and be able
to enrich the experience and can also benefit from its development. Writing skills give students
time to think about ideas rather than having to express opinions fluently, especially at lower
levels, find it difficult and awkward. Writing gives them confidence with the language and forces
them to use a regular or bilingual dictionary to expand their vocabulary. Their other skills
become honed and elevated as they think about how words are formed and spelled.

Media as a supporter of the learning process is very useful as a means of attracting students to
take part in learning.
By using learning media students can gain new experiences and have a high curiosity. In
addition, students are not only focused on the end result but also on the process as they see, hold,
and finish in their own way. Media must be used in an integrated manner or related to teaching
and learning which is not only an ice breaker in the teaching and learning process.

Movie is one of the audio-visual media that can be used by teachers in the learning process.
Because nowadays, films are becoming popular in teaching and learning process because they
are available for almost all kinds of topics and for all types of learners in all domains of
cognitive, affective, motor and interpersonal teaching.

Fantasy movie contains several narrative elements such as characters, dialogue, plot, and climax.
The use of fantasy films in writing activities can explore the structural devices of the story
(plotline, characters, development, setting, and themes). It will be easier for them in the writing
process. It can not only help students to get more realistic ideas in understanding narrative texts
but also in building ideas to create them.
-DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
To avoid a broad discussion, the researcher narrowed the research topic so that the focus of this
research was on students' writing skills. Researchers conducted an investigation using fantasy
movie. This study will focus on English classes in the first year of junior high school.

movie, and will be a viable option for teaching writing in junior high schools.

-DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS

1. Writing
Writing is one of the important skills that need to be mastered by language users. Writing
skills have a very important position in education. Writing skills are the part that has the
closest relationship in a learning process. Through learning, students are directed to be able to
develop writing skills. Writing can help students develop various ideas, express an idea and
by writing can train students' abilities in creative, critical, and reasoning thinking.
2. Media
Media has an important role in the teaching and learning process. They are device to
transfer some information from teacher to student. use of media in the process of learning
English is very helpful for creating efficient process.
3. Fantasy movie
Fantasy movie are fantasy movie with fantastical themes, which usually involve magic,
supernatural events, mythology, folklore, or exotic fantasy worlds. The genre is considered a
form of speculative fiction. Fantasy movie often have an element of magic, myth, magic,
escapism, and the extraordinary. Fantasy movie contain several narrative elements such as
characters, dialogue, plot, and climax.

-CHAPTER II, REVIEW OF LITERATURE

1. Writing Skills in Junior High School

Writing helps improve all skills because they are interrelated
Writing is an integral part of a larger activity where the focus is on something else such as
language practice, acting or speaking. Writing helps improve listening, speaking, and reading
skills because writing is a comprehensive skill that helps strengthen vocabulary, grammar,
thinking, planning, editing, revising, and other elements.

writing is the most difficult skill in language class

In writing students not only focus on the product but also their process during writing. According
to Elbow (1981) writing requires the ability to create words and ideas from oneself, but also
requires the ability to criticize them to explain which one to use. This means that students dig
their opinions or ideas into words from their activities or experiences. Therefore, to express an
idea or opinion correctly, the written text must be clear enough for the reader.

2. Teaching Writing in Junior High School

Teaching writing can support to strengthen grammar, reading, and vocabulary
In progress of writing focus on product and process writing
Writing as a communication tool and cannot be separated from the language learning process
that allows students to express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings in written form. This skill
involves the process of finding ideas in a text not only by putting words on paper but also by
selecting and organizing ideas by considering several components including content,
organization, vocabulary, language use (grammar) and mechanisms.

3. Teaching Writing using Media

Media helps teachers make teaching more effective.
Media can make students more interested in the teaching and learning process
The use and selection of media is important in the educational reconditioning process, because
the use of media can make students more interested in the teaching and learning process. So that
students can easily get ideas, media can help students develop their creativity in compiling
paragraphs. The use of media in learning will foster positive attitudes from both teachers and
students, due to the increased confidence of teachers and students to use technology in education.
Teaching media have an influence on students' motivation in learning and make the teaching and
learning process more lively so that it will increase students' understanding of the material.

4. Teaching Writing Using Movie

Movies can provide new situations in the classroom
Fantasy movie can be an effective media for learning narrative writing
By using films, students have great enthusiasm in the teaching and learning process and can help
students master the material given by the teacher. Harmer (2001) argues that: “Films are one of
the visual aids that can be used in writing classes. He makes lessons more fun. It can also be used
to make the writing class situation clearer, that students have great enthusiasm in the teaching
and learning process in the writing class.” Fantasy films contain several narrative elements such
as characters, dialogue, plot, and climax so that students can understand the generic structure of
narrative texts because they show real things, pictures and stories. or simple plots. From fantasy
films, students will get an overall picture of the film such as setting, plot, characters, moral
values and others.

5. Assessing Writing Skills

Assessment to evaluate the process of learning to write.
Assessment can determine students' ability in writing.
Assessing student writing is a process, it must occur at many different stages throughout the
course and can come in many forms. Assessment for teaching writing is important for assessing
student assignments. The effectiveness of the teaching and learning process, especially writing
skills, can be measured through assessment. Based on Brown (2004), there are five categories of
writing assessment such as organization, logical idea development, grammar, punctuation &
mechanics, style and quality of expression. Then about the score weights, such as for a score of
20-18 very good, 17-15 quite good, 14-15 enough, 11-6 not acceptable and the last 5-1 is a
college level job.

6. Theoretical Framework
Writing is a language skill that must be mastered by students
Fantasy movie are a type of movie that combines imaginative and fantastic themes
Fantasy movie can provoke students to put what they think into writing
Writing is more complicated to learn than any other skill. The problem that students often find in
the teaching and learning process of writing is the lack of ideas and vocabulary. Students do not
know what they are writing, they have no ideas to express in the writing process. Film is one of
the visual aids that can be used in writing classes. Fantasy movies tell about things that don't
make sense, such as magic, fairy tale creatures, other worlds and magical objects, in other words
fantasy movies are something related to fantasy or something that doesn't really exist and only
exists in the world. thought or imagination. So that with this imagination can provoke students to
pour what they think into writing so that it becomes a coherent story.

7. Research Hypothesis
Hypothesis is the answer of the research that may be true or false. From this study, the
researcher has a hypothesis from the results of this study.
H0 : There is no significant difference in the writing skills of students who are taught using
Fantasy Movie and using conventional teaching.
HI : There is a significant difference in the writing skills of students who are taught using
Fantasy Movie and using conventional teaching.

-CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD

A. Time and Place of the Research
The place of this research is at SMP N 13 Madiun. This school is located on Jl. Sumatra
No.13, Madiun Lor, Kec. Manguharjo, Madiun City, East Java.
The reason for choosing the location is that the researcher found in the pre-study that the
English teacher did not have a special technique in writing narrative text. Researchers
want to know the effectiveness of fantasy movie in the teaching and learning process.
Therefore, they need interesting techniques to learn to write narrative texts.

For the time of the study starting from February to July, for the first activity, namely
preparation such as Permission which was carried out in February, Arranging the plan of
research carried out in March, and Arranging the research instrument which was carried
out in March to April. For the second activity, namely Application such as Collecting
data, Analyzing data and Conclusion which was carried out from April to June. For the
third activity, namely Reporting such as Arranging the report of the research which was
carried out in July.

B. Research Design
Quantitative Research
Based on the problems and expectations to find out the effectiveness of using fantasy
films as a medium in writing narrative texts, it is assumed that the research method used
in this study is an experimental design with a quantitative approach.
The dependent variable in this study is learning to write narrative texts through fantasy
films and the independent variable is class VIII students of SMP N 13 Madiun. This
study uses a quasi-experimental. There are two classes that were chosen randomly,
namely the experimental class and the control class. The experimental class received
treatment and the control class did not apply the treatment but used conventional
methods.
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using fantasy films as a medium for
learning to write narrative texts for class VIII students of SMP N 13 Madiun. The use of
treatment is intended to prove there is a significant difference in student scores before and
after treatment.

C. Population and Sample and Sampling technique

Population : All students of class VIII SMPN 13 Madiun. each class consists of 30
students. Total 210 students.
Sample : All students of class VIII A and all students from VIII B in SMPN 13 Madiun
Sampling Technique : The sample methodology utilized was random sampling. Random
sampling will be carried out using classes that have been given permission by the school
to participate

D. Collecting Data
Collecting data by conducting a written test (pre-test and post-test).
Pre-test was given to the experimental class and control class in the same way. In this
test, it was given before the treatment for the experimental class. After that, the
experimental class was given teaching using fantasy films while the control class used
conventional teaching. Post-test was given to the experimental and control classes. This is
given to determine student achievement after being taught with "Film Fantasy"
(experimental class) and without "Film Fantasy" (control class). The post-test results
were compared to see if there was a difference in scores between before and after
treatment.

E. Instrument Writing Test

Writing test is used to determine the effect of using Fantasy Movie.
This written test is in line with the narrative text. In the experimental class, students are
asked to pay attention to the film that will be shown. Meanwhile, the control class uses
conventional teaching. Then the students were asked to write a narrative text by telling
the events using their own language. After that the researcher asked the students to collect
the results as test data. The researcher gave a pre-test at the beginning of the experimental
class and the control class to determine the students' familiarity with the topic to be
taught. In addition, post-test was used to assess whether students' English skills had
improved after the course and therapy were completed.

F. Data Analysis
T-test (SPSS) to analyze the data.
Homogeneity test
Normality test
Hypothesis test
The data obtained from the research results are student test results which were analyzed
quantitatively, using statistical calculations from the T-test (SPSS) to analyze the data
from the pre-test and post-test when the samples were not related. T-test is a statistical
test used to detect whether there is a significant difference between two samples. This
technique was used to find a significant difference in students' writing ability after being
taught to use fantasy films as a medium in teaching writing narrative text. Before
conducting the independent sample t-test, there are three test conditions that must be
carried out, namely normality, homogeneity and hypothesis tests.

1. Homogeneity Test
Homogeneity test is a test of whether the data is obtained from a homogeneous
distribution or not. The model used, especially in predictive research, must be appropriate
to its composition and distribution.
2. Normality test
The normality test was conducted to determine whether the data were taken from a
normal distribution or not. In decision making there are several possibilities to determine
whether the data is normal or not.
3. Hypothesis test
Hypothesis testing was conducted to determine the improvement of students' writing
skills by using Fantasy Movie. This hypothesis test was given to the experimental group
who were taught using Fantasy Movie. Hypothesis testing was carried out after testing for
normality and homogeneity.
