Timun Mas

In ancient times somewhere in the island of Java, Indonesia. There was a couple of
farmer lived in the village. They had married for many years. Unfortunately, they had no
children. So, they asked a monster called Buto Ijo to help them. They asked Ijo to give them a
child. Buto Ijo was a powerful and bad monster. He liked eating human meat. He accepted their
wish but in one condition. When their child gad grown up, they had to sacrifice him or her to Ijo.
The farmers agreed to Ijo’s condition.Timun Emas
Several years later, The wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. They named her Timun
Mas. Timun Mas had grown to be very smart and diligent girl. Someday, she met Buto Ijo in her
house. She was so afraid and frightened. Luckily, the farmers told Ijo to be patient because she
was still a child. They begged Ijo to hold his hunger. Ijo agreed with them. After some years, Ijo
came again to their house. But the farmers said that Timun was still a child as an excuse. Buto ijo
was still patient.
The third time Buto came, The farmers had prepared somethings to help Timun. They
gave her several bamboo needles, cucumber seeds, dressing, and salt.
Timun was so scared with Ijo. She tried to run away as quick as she could. Then Ijo came to their
house. He was angry when he found Timun was not there. So he ran and tried to find her. He had
a sharp nose so he knew the direction where Timun had gone.
Ijo could easily catch Timun. When Timun knew Ijo was just several steps behind her.
She spread the cucumber seeds. Magically, it turned into many vines of cucumber. Ijo was so
thirsty and exhausted. So, he ate many cucumbers. He forgot to catch Timun.
Soon, he realized that Timun had run away. So he started running again. When he just
several steps behind. Timun threw bamboo needles. Immediately, it turned into bamboo forest. It
made Buto Ijo slow. Ijo couldn’t pass bamboo tree easily. It took some times to pass it. So,
Timun could run farther.
Buto was success to pass the bamboo forest. So, he chased Timun again. He could almost
catch Timun. But, Timun took one of her weapons. This time, she threw the dressing. It changed
into a lake. Buto was struggles when he walked through the lake. So, Timun could run away.
Unfortunately, Buto could escaped. He found himself hard to chase Timun. But, he could almost
catch her.
When Buto wanted to grab her. Timun threw salt into him. Soon, the salt changed into
ocean. Buto was drowned and died in the ocean.
Timun Mas came back to her house. She and her parents lived happily ever after.
Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, there was a young lived in West Sumatra named Malin Kundang. He
lived with a poor fisherman family. His father went to sea to make a living for his family and he
never came back to home. People made an issue about his father’s death. This issue made his
mother anxious every day.
Several months later, his mother chose to forget about his father. She realized that she
had to work hard. She did a lot of works all day and night. Unfortunately, she still didn’t get
enough money for her family.
Malin couldn’t stand with his mother’s suffering. He decided to go sailing and made
money. He wanted to become a rich man so he could help his mother. At first, his mother didn’t
allowed him to go. She was afraid Malin did not come back like his father did. At the last, Malin
got his mother allowance to go.
Several years later, he became a rich sailor. He had many ships and crews. He was
married with a beautiful girl and had three children.
One day, he had a business in an island which is his hometown. In this island he met an
old lady. She hugged Malin very tightly. However, Malin scolded and pushed her. He realized
that old woman is his mother. But, he was afraid if his wife and children knew about his mother.
So, he told the old lady to go away. He said his mother was from a rich family. Noticing about
his son bad attitude, she was sad and angry. She prayed and said that Malin had to change into
stone. Malin kundang even scolded her more.
After finishing his business, he went sailing back with his wife and children. On the sea,
the sky instanly overcast. Heavy lighting and rain was failing. Their ship hit the rocks and
crashed. Malin swayed to the shore. The magic happened. He turned into stone liked her mother
wish. It was known as Malin Kundang stone by people of West Sumatra.
Sangkuriang
In ancient times, there was a girl named Dayang Sumbi who lived in West Java. She was
also a clever dan smart girl. The prince of heavenly kingdom of Kahyangan fell in love with her
beauty and intelligence. He wanted to make Dayang Sumbi as his wife. Prince came to his father
and asked for his permission to marry Sumbi. There was a rule that people from Kahyangan
could never live along the human. But, his father gave prince a permission with one one
condition. When they had a child, the prince had to transfrom into a dog. The prince accepted his
father’s condition.
One day, the prince and Sumbi got married and lived happily in the jungle. Then, Sumbi
gave birth to a son. So, the prince kept his promise to change into a dog named Tumang. Their
son named was Sangkuring. He was very handsome like the prince. Every day, he went to hunt
animals in the jungle. One day, when Sangkuriang was hunting for the animals, he
unintentionally killed Tumang. He missed his shot and the arrow hit Tumang. Then, he went to
home and told his mother about the dog.
“What did you do?” She was so angry and took a cooking tool. She hit Sangkuriang’s
head with it. She was so sad and cried a lot.
Looking his mother cried, Sangkuriang felt sorry to her. However, he was confused. He
tought his mother loved a dog more than him. Then, he dicided to leave his mother for a journey.
In the morning, Sumbi felt better and stopped crying. She went to the jungle to find Sangkuriang.
However, she could not find him. She was exhausted and decided to go to house. In her dream,
she met her husband.
“My love, don’t be sad. take my heart from my body. Then, soak it with the water, use
the water to bath. You will look young forever.” said her husband. She followed the prince’s
order. So, she looked more beutiful and younger.
After many years, Sangkuriang stopped in a village when he was on a journey. In the
village, he met a beautiful girl and fell in love with her. He wanted to marry the girl he loved. He
didn’t notice that the village was his homeland. Even, the beautiful girl he loved was his own
mother, Dayang Sumbi. One day, Sangkuriang asked Sumbi to fix his turban on his head. Sumbi
was so shocked when she find the scar on Sangkuriang’s head. A scar was at the same place
where she hit Sangkuriang’s head in years ago.
Then, Sumbi asked a guidance from the God. After praying, she was sure that the young
man was Sangkuriang. She decided to prevent Sangkuriang for marrying her. However, she
didn’t want to hurt him bya cancelling the wedding. So, she had a condition for Sangkuriang.
Sangkuriang had to make a lake and a beautiful boat in one night.
Sangkuriang took her challenge without a doubt because he had mastered some strong
magics. After the sun set, he went to the hill. He called many genies to help him. He commanded
the genies to build a lake. He also gave an order to genies to make a big boat from the trees. In
short time, Sangkuriang and his genies almost finished their work.
Dayang Sumbi realized that Sangkuriang would finish her order. She immediately asked
all the women in the village. She asked them to make a wave from a long red scarf. It looked as
if the sun would rise immediately. This condition made the roosters crowing. The farmer also
prepared to go to paddy field.
The genies immediately stopped their work and left Sangkuriang alone. Sangkuriang was
so angry because he could not finish his work. He was failed to marry Sumbi. He kicked the
unfinished boat with all of his power . It flew and landed on a valley. After landed, the boat
turned into a mountain which is called mount Tangkuban Perahu until now. He also kicked the
lake. The water drained from the lake and becoming a wide plain area. The area became a city
which is called Bandung.
Roro Jonggrang

In ancients times, there was an empire named Prambanan. Every people in Prambanan
lived calmly and peacefully. Until, the Pengging kingdom attacked this empire. Then, the king of
Pengging kingdom ruled Prambanan.. His name was Bandung Bondowoso. He was a greedy and
mean king. He also had miraculous power. He had humans and genies soldier.
The king of Prambanan had a daughter named Roro Jonggarang. She was very beautiful.
Unfortunely, Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her beauty. He really wanted to marry
Jonggrang.
“You are very attractive, do you want to be my lady?” asked Bandung Bondowoso.
Jonggarang was surprised and shocked with his request. She didn’t want to marry a man
like Bondowoso. She wanted to say no, but she was afraid that Bondowoso would be mad and
angry. She was also afraid that he would endangered her people of Prambanan. Then, she had a
plan.
“If you really want to marry me, I give you one night to construct a thousand temples.”
Said Jonggrang.
“That is useless! I can’t build it in one night!” said Bondowoso. But, Bondowoso did not
give up. He came to his adviser.
“Oh my king, you can asked your genies to help you with her request.” Said his adviser.
So, Bondowoso called all of his genies. He gave them instruction to build a thousand
temples. The speed of temple construction was so quickly. At the same time, Jonggrang heard
from her assistant that the temple construction was almost finished. She was so anxious. The, she
had another great idea. She called every servant to help her.
“Please help me to prepare a lot of straws and mortars.” Asked Jonggrang. “Burn the
straws and make some noise from the mortars.”
All of her servants did what she asked. The sound of mortars and the burning straw
fooled the genies. They thought the sun was going to rise.
“It’s dawn, we have to go.” said one of the genies to Bondowoso. They was afraid os the
sun. So, they stopped their work and left Bondowoso. They didn’t know that Joggrang tricked
them with the burning straws and pounding mortars.
Bondowoso could not stop the genies from leaving him. He was mad. He knew that
Jonggrang had tricked him.
“You can’t trick me, Jonggrang. I have already made 999 temples. I just need to construct
one more temple!”
He pointed his finger to her and said some chant. Then, Jonggrang’s body turned into
temple. Until now the temples are still standing in Prambanan, Central Java. One of the temples
is called Roro Jonggrang temple.
Danau Toba
Once upon a time, there was a young person live in a small village. His was called Toba.
He had two magnificent capacities regarding fishing and cultivating. Toba was so good in. He
didn’t take long time to catch a fish. Just tossed the hook into the river, and he got the big
fish.One day, he went fishing to a river that was wide enough. It just took a little time after he
tossed the hook into river, the fish stuck in the bait and he got a big fish for dinner.Then, he went
home and along the way he proceeded satisfied in having enough fish for a dinner. He moved the
fish to the tub loaded with water. He needed the fish stay fresh. So, the taste of fish could remain
great. Then, he arranged seasoning and firewood which required in cooking. But, he didn’t have
enough firewood and promptly searched for firewood in the timberland.
A few hours later, he went home and carried some firewood for cooking. However, when
he returned home, he was surprised that the fish was lost. He even discovered pieces of gold and
a lovely young lady who was sitting in his room.
Moreover, the beautiful young lady advised Toba that she was the fish which was
captured by him. Amazed with her beauty, Toba then asked that pretty young lady to marry him.
The young lady agreed with Toba’s request, However, Toba had to promise not to bring her past.
Toba accepted it and they were married.
His wife and he got a blessed kid named Samosir. His child was exceptionally intelligent
and agile, but spoiled. When their kid was at his first age, there is a task which should be done
every day. He had to deliver the food into Toba’s rice fields. One day, Samosir was very lazy to
deliver food to the rice field. His mother scolded him.
Then, Samosir was forced to deliver the foods. Because he was so upset, he ate many of
the food at the trip to rice fields. There was only a little food left. When he gave it to Toba. He
was asked by Toba about it.
Toba was so angry when he noticed that Samosir had eaten the foods. He said that
Samosir was a child fish. Samosir was so sad and he went home. He complained to his mother.
His mother was angry with Toba. She was upset because Toba failed to keep his promise. Even
though Toba had begged so much, but his wife would never forgive him. His wife and Samosir
decided to go to the river. They turned into a fish again.
Suddenly, the rain came very heavily. Heavy rains sank Toba. Then, it formed a lake known as
Toba Lake.
