a) Explain the term mechanical advantage of a machine.
b) State the principle of levers.
c) In Class 1 lever, the effort arm is shorter than the load arm . Does a small applied
force help this lever lift a large load ? .How can you increase the mechanical
advantage of a lever?
d) What is wheel and axle? Give two examples.
e) Calculate the mechanical advantage of a crowbar of length 240cm if its fulcrum is
at a distance of 40cm from the load?

a) Draw diagrams to show the position of load, effort and fulcrum in class I, Class II
and class III levers. Explain how their mechanical advantages are different. (3)
b) i) Describe a pulley.
ii) Differentiate between a single fixed pulley and a single movable pulley. (3)
c) A man uses a 2.5. long crowbar to raise a lead of 1000N.
Find
(a) The effort needed to lift the load.
(b) The mechanical advantage of the crowbar. The fulcrum is located at 2m from
the effort end. (4)
