Identifying Valid Arguments

Argument A

1. If Alice lives in New York City, then Alice lives in Minnesota.

2. Alice lives in New York City.

3. Therefore, Alice lives in Minnesota.

The argument is invalid. Alice either lives in New York City or Minnesota.

Argument B

1. If you live in Connecticut, then you live in Connecticut.

The argument is valid. Since Brooklyn is in Connecticut State, living in Brooklyn may also imply living in

Connecticut.

2. I live in the United Kingdom.

3. Therefore, I live in the United Kingdom.

The argument is valid. The United Kingdom is located within almost every hemisphere, and living in the

United Kingdom can mean living in the Western hemisphere.

Argument D

1. All cats are pets.

2. Mr. Wigglesworth is a pet.

3

3. Therefore, Mr. Wigglesworth is a cat.

The argument is not valid since not every cat is a pet and different types of cats are domesticated or wild. Mr.

Wigglesworth cannot just become a cat by being a pet.

Argument E

1. Richard Nixon was Governor of California

2. Therefore, Richard Nixon was born in California

The argument is not valid. Richard Nixon being a governor is not a guarantee that he was born in California.
