A Strange Darkness

দুরে কাছে কেবলি নগর, ঘর ভাঙে;
গ্রামপতনের শব্দ হয়;

নিঃশব্দে, অলক্ষে ;
Mirror
Jasimuddin
A farmer found a mirror when he was cutting paddy. That time there was no usage
of mirror in this country. No one has seen a mirror in anyone’s house. How did a
mirror fell from Kabuliwala’s bag in the middle of the field? The farmer got the
mirror and he took it. Suddenly, he sees a man in the mirror. ! Ah-h, this is the face
of his father!
A long time ago his father has died. Today the farmer’s own appearance has grown
like his father. All the boys grow up and get the look of their father. So the farmer
thought by showing his own appearance in the mirror, he was watching his father.
Then he took the mirror to his forehead and salutes it. Took it on his face and
kissed. “Ah Father! You have come down from the sky and you’re hiding in my
paddy field! Father –Father! Oh Father”
That is how the farmer speaks and looks to the mirror. His father looks in a
different way inside the mirror. The farmer says Father after your death, I have
planted different paddy such as golden paddy, shail paddy all over your land. See
father see! How they are shining in the sunshine. After your death we had only
one house. I have built three houses. Father! O my lovely father! My dearest
father”
The farmer did nothing else that day .He took the mirror and walked around all his
fields. When the sun set down he comes home and he thinking where to keep the
mirror in safe. He is a poor man. He has no box in his house to keep the mirror. He
decided to hide the mirror in the pitcher.
The next day, the farmer works unmindfully and runs home. He goes here, goes
there, and runs home. When he came home he picked the mirror from the pitcher
and started to talk a lot. Father! O my father! I left you alone and doing different
work, don’t feel sad. Look father! If I am not doing my work properly then what
will we eat?
On the other hand, the farmer’s wife think my husband had spent a lot of time with
me, cracking joke and make me laugh but nowadays, he is not even talking with
me. He picks something from the pitcher and look on it then he starting to talk
blather, what is the reason behind this?
The farmer went to the field that day to work in the fields. The farmer's wife
secretly took out the mirror from the pitcher and looked at it and started to get very
angry. She had her own shadow on the mirror. But she never saw her face in the
mirror. She thought that he had married another woman and hid it in the pitcher.
That’s why; her husband has not spoken to her for a while. He talks to the girl
whenever he is free.
"Let my husband come home. Today I will show you the fun!" And angrily take a
broom then started mumbling all the cures word she will say to her husband.
At noon, when he returned home tiredly after a very hard work in the field, the
farmer's wife came with a broom and said, "You slave, Is that what you are doing?
Whom have you married?” She threw the mirror in front of the farmer.
"What are do you doing?—that’s my dad!" he said, and take the mirror with a great
care.
"Let me show you your dad!" she said, "Look at her husband! Is there a girl sitting
in it? Is this your new wife?”
O slave! Oh cheater! Yet says it’s your dad! Does your dad wear jewelry or a tip
on your forehead? "The wife screamed more loudly.
The elder daughter-in-law of the neighbor house came to visit with her half vail on
her head and said, 'Hey, why is your house so quarrelsome? What a lovely couple
you are! You guys never quarrel.”
The farmer's wife came forward and said, "Look, Sister! My husband got married
to another wife and hid in a pitcher. I will stamp that 2nd wife with my leg? Look,
Sister! Who is inside this mirror? "
The elder daughter-in-law of the neighbor house came and put her face on the
mirror! Then two faces inside the mirror appeared. And the elder wife of the house
said, "That is your appearance. And look like someone else's face. "
The farmer said, "What are you saying sister, that’s my father’s face inside it."
With this the farmer came and put his face on the mirror. The faces of the three
were then seen. Listening to their cry and the younger of the neighbor house, she
came to the house with another 2nd daughter-in-law, Arfan's mother, Rahman's
sister, Anwar's grandmother. The face of the mirror, the appearance of them is seen
in the mirror - this is a great miracle!
Rumor had spread from village to village. People came from all over the country to
see the magic of magic. Then slowly people understood that is the mirror.
The End
Translation, as we know is transference of meaning from Target Language (TL) to
Source Language (SL).
The difficulty in translation is due to the fact that each word in a language is
charged with memory, associations and literary allusions. The problems I faced
during translating are: lexical-semantic problems; grammar; syntax; rhetoric; and
pragmatic and cultural problems.
1. Lexical-semantic problems
2. Grammatical problems
3. Syntactical problems
4. Rhetorical problems
5. Pragmatic problems
Pragmatic problems arise with the difference in the formal and informal modes of
address using “you”, as well as idiomatic phrases, sayings, irony, humor and
sarcasm.
6. Cultural issues
Cultural issues may arise from differences between cultural references, such as
names of food, festivals and cultural connotations, in general.
