Abstract—Uhis paper deals with the design of a new observer synthe=
sis for discrete Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models. I is wel established
that quadratic synthesis for discrete T-S models andlor linear parameter
‘varying systems cam be outperformed easily vin nonguratic syntheses,
‘Several Lyapunov functions can be used. Nevertheless, this paper shows
‘that with “small” change i the initial Lyapuno function, a etter” Ga

‘posed. Following this way, combining [18] and Polya’s approach (10),
recent and similar works (21), [22] extended the result to polynomial
‘Lyapunoy functions, thus increasing the number of sum atthe same
instant. New improvements in the discrete case were developed in [23],
‘where stability conditions were obtained replacing the classical one-
‘sample variation ofthe Lyapunov function by its variation over several
samples V(t-+)-V(t) <0, k>1 (Ge, k-sample variation ap-
proach). The authors proved that the more the samples considered,
the loss conservative the results, where several families of new and
promising results were obtained [23], [24]. Most ofthese results can
‘be extended to the problem of state vector estimation, i., designing
an observer,
Nevertheless, despite these nice results, te initial Lyepunov func-
tion choice thats made in{18] isnot the “best” possible one. Therefore,
‘the main proposition of this papers to present a new Lyapunov func
tion and the associated results for observer design. Explanations on
the advantages ofthis Lyapunov function are given. The extension to
‘sample variations as in [25] is also done. Notice that every re-
laxation scheme could have been done beginning with that the new
LLyapunoy function and outperforming the oldest one. Indeed, itis pos-
sibleto apply directly for example, Polya stuf [10] and/or polynomial
‘Lyapunov function [21], [22], but this is not within the scope of this
