January 28th Assignment

Connor Croasmun

1) Rothstein feels like these are half truths. While it is sometimes good to play out of the
structure, it can often hinder performance. Resulting in a pedantic style coming from overuse of
analysis.
2) The magic comes from a mixture of analysis and synthesis of the ideas from that analysis.
Schenker’s was to follow the voice-leading of a piece from and to the tonic triad.
3) They are overly academic. Rather, a listener should hear a subject only after it has started. That,
or the should not be aware of it at all. The overall flow of the piece is more important than
where the subject is at any one time.
4) How well can the motive be heard without the assistance of the pianist, and what role does that
motive play in the drama of the music at that particular time. The closing of the 2 nd movement
should be brought out. It is a closing to the drama, and is also easily covered up by the texture of
the piece at that time. This is in contrast to measures 30-3. The texture is light, and while
awareness of the motif is needed, it is easily hear, and therefore easily overplayed.
