ARTICLE-CO-EDUCATIONAL OR SINGLE-SEX

EDUCATION.
Carmen Gómez Alarcón 23/12/21

If you were asked about single-sex education, would you know what it is?
Did you ever overhear about single-sex schools? Currently, in Spain, co-
educational systems are a lot more common than single-sex ones, however, it
wasn’t like that 20 year ago. Take the case of my father, he went to a single-sex
school when he was young until he started high school. He sometimes reminds
me about how things could have changed if he had been mixed with girls- he
still thinks only-male schools are wrong.
We all know things have changed. What’s more, rights in advanced
countries tend to be more equal-that might explain co-education. That is the
case of Spain, France, Germany, etc. Nevertheless, there are advanced countries
that support only-boy and only-girl institutions, for instance England. In
England there are female only schools built to give a free space for female
youngsters. Its aim is “to build women’s confidence when there are no men
around”.
Wouldn’t it be more interesting growing up in a wide-ranging class? How
dare you to disconnect people according to their gender when in the future they
will need to work together and understand each other? According to research,
it’s harmful to separate girls from boys and vice versa based on their biological
attributes.
In my view, every woman and man have great personal traits which benefit
each other hugely. I am glad I studied in a co-educational system because I feel
fulfilled. We shouldn’t make differences in the way of learning. If we want an
equal society, we should teach women and men all together, that is the main
principle.
