: To what extent is the automation in supermarkets growing?

Diapo 4 : Présentation du développement

Diapo 5 : I. The supermarkets and his employees

A. Automotion : an alternative for supermarkets

In 2004, at the start of deployment in France, a self-service checkout cost more than
20,000 euros compared to 11,000 euros for a traditional solution.

For investment reasons, this solution is offered by large groups or their subsidiaries.
For example in France in 2019, large hypermarkets are almost all equipped with this
type of checkout: 100% of Cora, 99% of Auchan or 95% of Hyper U, the percentage of
equipped supermarkets is lower 74% of Monoprix, 69 % of Casino supermarkets.

Diapo 6 :
Today supermarkets use automation for several reasons:
 Reduced waiting time for the consumer and reduce the payroll by workforce
reduction
 Improvement of working conditions and drastic reduction of repetitive tasks
 The hidden advantage of automatic cash registers is that they save time-
consuming and morally tiring tasks for the employee.
 Maximize profits by increasing employee productivity

Diapo 7 : 5% -37% of checkouts without a cashier at Monoprix.

On the retailer side, Monoprix relies heavily on this equipment: 37% of checkouts are
done without a cashier or cashier and generate 26% of turnover for an average basket
of 17 items. "
Conversely, the rate falls to 4% of the turnover of U and Intermarché stores.

Diapo 8 :
3% to 18% of customers use self-service checkouts, including:
11% have mixed traditional cash registers and automatic cash registers
7% used only self-service checkout

Diapo 9 :
B. Employees : New organization, New profession

The number of cashiers has decreased over the past ten years from 5% to 10%. The
profession is evolving and cashiers are being trained in the new profession of
“customer advisor” or versatile employee depending on the distribution brands. The

checkouts must both assist customers in their purchases from automatic checkouts
and guide them through the shelves. This raises fears of a risk of overwork, both
physical and mental.

Diapo 10 :
Automatic cash registers have degraded working conditions. Employees face increasing
stress. The tasks of the employees were extended to the supervision and the controls.
The job of cashier may be eliminated in the years to come with the introduction of
robotization of repetitive and non-rewarding tasks.
Cashiers have a physically hard and poorly paid job

But supermarkets always require human assistance. Specially to fix system bugs, lack
of customer experience in IT, bar code errors ...

And one of the biggest challenges is going to be persuading consumers.

Diapo 11 :
C. Consumer expectations

Automatic checkouts are increasingly attractive to consumers. According to a study,

18% of French people use at least once a month (basket of less than 10 items).
Traditional cash registers would retain the favors of older customers.

The reasons that attract consumers to self-checkout are clear. They are driven by two main
factors: purchases made in small quantities and the desire to pay faster. Customers
appreciate being independent especially when they have few items.

People are essential in their stores. Human contact is an added value.
