INTRODUCTION
The construction industry is a complex industry that obligates different parties from
different disciplines to interact with each other to produce the final product, which is the
construction project. At any stage of the project lifecycle, any interaction drawback would
affect drastically all subsequent stages. Moreover, quality degradation and cost and time
ineffectiveness increase by being late in observing such drawbacks along the project
lifecycle. Several initiatives are taken by the industry and by computer aided design (CAD)
developers to integrate the digital project information into CAD systems. An effort that
concerns the implementation of a methodology for sharing product information through a
distributed object model.
IMPORTANCE OF CAD IN ARCHITECTURE
The advent of the Internet has opened and given, particularly, the developing countries
and the world, in general, a transformation into collective intelligence societies linked to
digital communication. In the context of architectural designs and construction industries,
the birth of Internet-based computer-aided design (iCAD) solutions has offered a new
dimension to architectural practice. The function of CAD has expanded as a tool to
communicate and collaborate as well as to better control all phases of the architectural
practices. Trials have been conducted to explore the technical issues related to the
integrated use of CAD and virtual environments within the house building sector of the
construction industry and to investigate the practical use of the new technology.
Collaborative working in the construction industry is becoming a reality as many activities
are performed globally with actors in different geographical locations.
PURPOSE
Interaction enables a faster design iteration cycle that permits: exploring more design
alternatives, obtaining more accurate design specifications, simulating more operational
behaviors, and configuring more freedom to designers.
CAD is used as for the following purpose:
• To produce detailed engineering designs through 3-D and 2-D drawings of the physical
components of manufactured products.
• To create conceptual design, product layout, strength and dynamic analysis of
assembly and the manufacturing processes themselves.
• To prepare environmental impact reports, in which computer-aided designs are used
in photographs to produce a rendering of the appearance when the new structures are
built.
The proposed plan for a Shared
Computer-Aided Structural Design has
significant economic and social values
that can be summarized as follow:
• Time and Cost Effectiveness in
construction industry.
• Automation of structural design
checking process.
• Consistency in design codes
interpretation.
SPECIALIZED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS SOFTWARE :
• ABAQUS, ADINA, ANSYS, ETABS, NASTRAN, SAP2000, etc.
• SAP2000 Integrated software for structural analysis &
design (e.g. for bridges)
• Etabs
• Safe
• STAAD.Pro
• Prokon
• Sap2000
A Structure can be defined as an assemblage of elements.
STAAD is capable of analyzing and designing structures
consisting of both frame, and finite elements.
Almost any type of structure can be analyzed by STAAD.
Frame
elements and beam elements.

Advantages of Staad.Pro :-
1. Covers all aspects of structural engineering
2. Broad spectra of design codes
3. International codes
4. Quality assurance
5. Reports and documentation
STAAD.Pro is one of the most widely used structural
analysis and design software products worldwide. It
supports over 90 international steel, concrete, timber &
aluminium design codes.
• It can make use of various forms of analysis from the
traditional static analysis to more recent analysis
methods like p-delta analysis, geometric non-linear
analysis, Pushover analysis (Static-Non Linear
Analysis) or a buckling analysis. It can also make use
of various forms of dynamic analysis methods from
time history analysis to response spectrum analysis.
• Additionally, STAAD.Pro is interoperable with
applications such as RAM Connection, AutoPIPE, SACS
and many more engineering design and analysis
applications to further improve collaboration
between the different disciplines involved in a
project.
• STAAD can be used for analysis and design of all types
of structural projects from plants, buildings, and
bridges to towers, tunnels, metro stations,
water/wastewater treatment plants and more.
