INTRODUCTION

The term Software Engineering (SE) is a combination of two words: software and
engineering. The term software is a collection of executable programming code,
associated libraries and documentations made for a specific requirement. On the other
hand, engineering is all about the developing products using well-defined, scientific
principles and methods. So Software engineering is a branch of engineering which is
associated with the development of software products using well-defined, scientific
principles, methods and procedures. It was introduced to solve the issue of software crisis.
Software became an integral part of our nowadays private and business life. Day-by-day
technology is penetrating new areas and reaching higher scope; that is why Software
Engineering has an impact in our current society. All along this work, we will talk about
the positive influence of software engineering on one side and the negative influence on
the other side.

As software continues integrating into devices and tools, it remains to help us solve
different life challenges in various domains such as

HEALTH

In term of prevention, the app develops by software engineers are helping people seek help
before it is too late. From online consultations with a doctor to therapy sessions to prevent
depression, the knock-on effect is that the power of technology is allowing people to seek help
before it is too late. Rather than having to take time out of their day people can now reach out to
specialists at the click of a button and get the help they need.
Moreover, they are some app that are used to do analyzes and this helps to detect medical
problems.

TRANSPORT
GPS and map application permits us to go anywhere in the world without fear and deviation. If
we straggled in a city or desolated place, these technology help us reaching exactly where we
want to be. Google maps for example is capable to predict time required, traffic conditions,
weather status and sometimes giving vital advises and alerts about the roads and destinations we
are travelling.

BANKING
Software is used in banking sector to maintain a robust database of transaction and to ensure the
integrity of the information stored.

COMMUNICATION
Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc have meant falling out of touch
with people is now a personal choice. With these social media platforms, we can communicate
with people who live far away instantly. Before programmers created these platforms, people
were using letters, which take a lot of time before arriving.

Before programmers created platforms like YouTube, Netflix and other services, entertainment
was restricted. Cable TV and newspapers were the primary sources of information for most
people across the globe. Now you can consume sources of information from every country on
earth. Don’t like what is on TV tonight? Fire up Netflix and choose something you prefer.

EDUCATION
Three decades ago, if anyone has a doubt to be clarified in a learning process, finding right expert
itself was a cumbersome task and there may not be available further opinion about the subject.
Although the different and easiest clarification or solution are available on the other side of the
world, we were unable to know its whereabouts because lack of communication. Now, our
“Guru” as all we know is “Google search” being evolved as Human Assist adopting Artificial
Intelligence helps to find answers virtually on any subjects in a moment, find books and many
other things. Sometimes, teachers even use digital support for teaching.

COMMERCIAL
Through the applications developed such as Kikuu, Alibaba, we have online sale. Forget going to
a store, everything can be purchased and delivered to your door at the push of a button. Apps
like Uber offer on-demand services, this helps to save a lot of time.

DEFENSE AND MILITARY

How do you think that a military can launch a missile from a faraway location to another distant
location? Software engineering is involved in that process for sure.
In addition, without advancements in software engineering, we would not have drones of any
kind. Drones are continuing to level up and become more sophisticated because of the
advancements in the field. Most things that have to do with defense and satellites has a lot of
software engineering and innovation involved.

The ways in which software engineering has made defense and military so advanced is interesting.
What will be even more interesting and scary is how much it will advance in the next decade
because at the current rate it is alarming!

Even though there are some great benefits of software engineering in our current
activities, nevertheless it has also changed our lives negatively.

II. NEGATIVE IMPACT OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERING IN OUR SOCIETY

Many of us suffer from a multitude of negative results of software. The list below outlines a
few aspects of the enormous and sometimes negative impact of software on our daily lives.

 Becoming anti-social or depressed: It is very easy for users to become anti-social when
using some apps. For example, they are many people who mostly depend on online
shopping; they rarely go out to shop with others so they become easily introvert.

 Reduction of jobs: Software can also become the reason to replace the need for many
jobs, as they are smarter. For example, they are some apps that allow paying your bill
online. If you already pay your bill online so, there is no need to employ many cashier.

 Time sink and lot of distractions: You can get distracted while trying to work with the
popularity of social networks and notifications.

 Poorly written software can cause permanent and irreversible damage. E.g., a faulty
medical equipment can lead to the death of a patient.

 Software can potentially be used to perpetuate crime.

 Potential loss of privacy: To have access to some apps, you have to fill some personal
information and any malicious person like hacker can steal your personal information.

 Trolls, stalking, exploitation: There are some online services available that can be used by
hackers to find information about people and tracked you.
