Introduction:
We will be continuing our discussions about Empires this
lesson, and today we will be focusing on the rise of empires
in Eurasia from roughly 600-1500. The goal of this lesson
is to identify why these empires grew and spread.

For this lesson, you will be able to choose what Empire you
would like to focus on. You may choose either the First
Islamic Caliphate or the Mughal Empire.

Step 1: Explore

If you would like to focus on the First Islamic Caliphate, fully

explore the following:
➢ Islam, the Quran, and the Five Pillars All
Without a Flamewar: Crash Course World
History #13
➢ The rise of Islamic empires and states
➢ Quran - The Night Journey (Primary Source Tip: what does this text say about crime and
punishment? Would you consider this a description of a “justice system?)

If you would like to focus on the Mughal Empire, fully explore the following:
➢ Mughal rule in India | 1450 - Present | World History | Khan Academy
➢ The Mughal Dynasty
➢ Introduction to the work, Babur and his various early victories and defeats, Babur's
visit to Khurasan, rebellion in Kabul by Mirza Khan, Babur's victory (Primary
Source Tip: Focus on how Babur intends to win the fight. Is it entirely military?)

Step 2: Explain

After exploring one of the two empires discussed in this lesson, it is now time to explain
what you found. Explain three key aspects of your empire of interest’s rise and rule however
you would like. In other words, identify at least three ways your empire acquired power and held
onto that power once it established itself. You may explain this via short answer, an audio or video
recording, poster, or whatever else you would like. Whatever you choose, the explanation must
identify the key aspects and explain how those key aspects affected the empire.

Upload your explanation to your Google Drive folder with the following title format:
Lastname_Firstname_EmpiresExplainer

Step 3: Share

Once you have explained the three key aspects of your empire's rise and rule, it is time to share
them! Upload the link to your explanation to this Padlet under the appropriate heading. Review 1-3
explanations from students who chose to study the empire you did not. I.e, if you studied the First
Islamic Caliphate, view 1-3 explanations about the Mughal Empire, and if you studied the Mughal
Empire, view 1-3 explanations from the First Islamic Caliphate.

Step 4: Reflect

In the last portion of the Padlet, post a reflection. The reflection should answer two questions:
1. Identify one difference and one similarity in the key aspects of rise and rule of the First
Islamic Caliphate and the Mughal Empire.
2. In your opinion, what is the most important key aspect of an empire? Why? Explain.
