A child called “it”

The author of the book A Child Called “it”, Dave Pelzer is a living proof of the issue of

child abuse as the autobiographical story tells us how he was brutally beaten and deprived of all

rights of a child by his mother, an alcoholic woman, who was unbalanced and dominant. He was

subjected to cruel games and unbelievable torture, which led him almost to the gates of death. To

survive, Dave had to learn to play the games of his mother who considered him more like his

son, but as a "slave" and even that no longer saw him as a child but as an object, a "thing"

Dave slept on a cot in the basement and wore dirty clothes and worn. The food that his

mother condescended to give was the remains disgusting that even the dog refused to eat. Dave

makes us witness to his courage, his determination and his fierce struggle to survive; he shares

his loneliness, his pain and even his dreams of becoming a beloved child.

This story is disturbing to reflect on the sad and harsh reality of cruelty. Thousands of

children worldwide are victims of abuse who become torture and can lead to death, even if the

company is governed by standards, rules and laws that protect children. This story is touching as

well as shocking as addresses an issue that never came to mind, as no one can imagine the

thought that a mother could do such things to her child.

Page after page, readers see the fear and pain that the child lived at the same time all he

has done to preserve his life and how he had the strength and courage to never give up. The most

surprising thing is that even his father did not give him help because he was also subject to the

dominant woman. It is touching to see that despite all the tortures that his mother gave him, deep

in his heart he does not hate, he tried to justify the ruthless and evil behavior of his mother.
