Leonardo preferred to observe the world

with reason rather than with faith : in his

opinion, nature is governed by an order which, through its laws, regulates all phenomena
that occur in the world, and the scientist's task is to discover these read.
To understand its meaning, it may be interesting to start from a passage by Manfredo
Tafuri, who wrote in 1978: "in this drawing the microcosm of man is visualized, a theme
dear to the Platonic and Neoplatonic tradition, in relation to the order of the cosmos and to
the created from scratch by architecture ". The artists who had tried their hand at the
Vitruvian canon did not only intend to solve problems of a practical nature, or to provide
canons for measurement (let's not forget that in ancient times the units of measurement
were parts of the human body: the foot, the cubit, the palm ...), or to define the correct
proportions for the representation of man in painting and sculpture and relating them, in
architecture, to the proportions of buildings: the attempts to satisfy the Vitruvian canon also
had important symbolic implications
A man of genius and universal talent [1] of the Renaissance , considered one of the
greatest geniuses of humanity [2] [3] , he fully embodied the spirit of his era, bringing it to the greatest
forms of expression in the most disparate fields of art and knowledge: he was in fact
a scientist , philosopher , architect , painter , sculptor , draftsman , essayist , set
designer , mathematician , anatomist , botanist , musician [4][5] [6] , engineer and designer .
